Full-Time Engineering Technician – Entry Level!
Job Description
- Assist in the inspection of roadway assets and inventories.
- Install traffic and erosion control devices involved in road maintenance and construction activities.
- Operate hand and power tools.
- Clean right of ways.
- Repair pavements.
- Assist with pipe installation and other drainage tasks.
- Inventory materials.
- Operate heavy equipment.
- Shovel, rake, lay asphalt, flag traffic, dig ditches, and perform landscape shrubbing.
- Assist in preliminary inspection work for Routine Maintenance Improvement and Highway Maintenance Improvement programs.
- Conduct inspections including storm drains and appurtenances, roadway surface treatment condition, and highway safety related issues.
- Perform entry level technical work involving material sampling, testing, and inspections to determine adherence to codes/standards by NCDOT and private contractors.
- Perform weekly county-wide guardrail damage assessment.
- Assist in National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System inspections and record keeping.
- Assist maintenance crews.
- Submit required records, reports, and diaries within time frames.
- Evaluate and apply your engineering judgment to plan interpretation.
- Establish and maintain positive communications between technicians, engineers, contractors, and the public.
- Apply safety philosophy and program to all operations.
- Ability to operate a small tandem dump truck.
- Experience inspecting contract work.
- Basic knowledge of NCDOT driveway and encroachment policies, erosion control plans, and installation procedures.
- Agility to traverse rough terrain in evaluating highway construction.
- Ability to work in close proximity to high volumes of traffic and heavy construction equipment.
- Ability to safely operate a State vehicle.
- Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology, or a related curriculum; or
- An equivalent combination of training and experience.
- You may be subject to emergency callbacks and scheduled night work during adverse weather or extreme circumstances.
- You may be subject to work at any time, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
