Full-Time Engineering Supervisor III – Roadway Design
Job Description
- Lead the research into local, state, and national roadway design guidance and generate reports on their findings to help our leadership team evaluate the need to update current NCDOT design policies and practices.
- Develop documents capturing the status of design guidance, processes, and procedures.
- Coordinate our Roadway Design Manual committee and contracted staff activities to ensure the Roadway Design Manual is maintained as a living document.
- Facilitate NCDOT’s continued transition to and integration of Open Roads Designer (ORD).
- Coordinate with other Roadway Design staff to ensure effective training materials are developed on roadway design guidance and best practices.
- Lead work groups and meetings with other representatives from NCDOT, NCDIT, and private vendors to ensure successful implementation of the 3D design initiative utilizing Open Roads Designer (ORD).
- Lead our team’s support by collaborating with other technical units, divisions, and external partners to respond to inquiries from the Director of Technical Services, Board of Transportation members, FHWA, AASHTO, public, news media, and other resource agencies.
- Advise and counsel junior engineers, and other staff in their day-to-day work to ensure a team approach to their work responsibilities.
- Lead development of roadway design plans and calculation of quantities.
- Provide training and professional development opportunities to team members including Transportation Engineering Associates and summer interns to ensure they are growing as engineers and professionals.
- Knowledge of civil engineering principles (especially related to highway design), AASHTO guidance, Roadway Design Manual, Bridge Policy, NCDOT Standard Drawings, and Specifications.
- Experience in the development and review of engineered design plans and details to determine compliance and compatibility with construction and engineering principles and maintenance standards, codes, and statues.
- Experience facilitating meetings, setting project/team goals, tracking progress, and cooperatively resolving issues to ensure goals are met in a timely manner.
- Experience performing engineering analysis and preparing technical documentation and presentations to communicate information in a clear, concise, and organized manner to stakeholders.
- Knowledge of Bentley highway design software and workspaces (MicroStation, Open Roads Designer, Geopak, and Corridor Modeling).
- Experience supervising permanent employees, contractors, and/or consultants.
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, and
- 5+ years of hydraulics engineering experience, including
- 3+ years of management experience; or
- An equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Candidates registered as a Professional Engineer in North Carolina.
- We may require registration as a professional engineer with the NC Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
