Full-Time Engineering Supervisor II – Roadway Design
Job Description
- Manage a team of engineers in the production and review of roadway design plans.
- Direct the preparation and review of roadway design plans and public meeting maps throughout the project delivery process using sound engineering judgement.
- Direct the preparation and review of calculation of quantities used to generate cost estimates required for the allocation of funds for Transportation Improvement projects (TIPs).
- Serve as a technical expert on roadway design related questions from consultants, NCDOT staff, and other units to clarify design requirements.
- Assist in the development of roadway design scopes of services and development of project schedules for internal and consultant-led projects.
- Prepare and negotiate labor estimates for roadway design work with consultants.
- Evaluate consultant performance on roadway design submittals.
- Serve as the technical design lead for projects developed by internal staff to identify potential project risks and ensure they have been appropriately coordinated and resolved with other technical leads.
- Advise and counsel junior engineers and other employees in their day-to-day work to ensure a team approach.
- Identify and provide training and professional development opportunities to team members, including Transportation Engineering Associates and summer interns, to ensure they are growing as engineers and professionals.
- Civil engineering knowledge of the principles (especially relating to highway design), AASHTO guidance, Roadway Design Manual, Bridge Policy, and NCDOT Standard Drawings and Specifications.
- Experience in the development and review of engineered design plans and details to determine compliance and compatibility with construction and engineering principles and maintenance standards, codes, and statues.
- Demonstrated ability to facilitate meetings, set project/team goals, track the progress of goals, and cooperatively resolve issues to ensure goals are met in a timely manner.
- Computer skills using Bentley highway design software and workspaces (MicroStation, GeoPak, Open Roads Designer, and Corridor Modeling).
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, and
- 4+ years of progressive experience, and
- 2+ years of supervisory experience; or
- An equivalent combination of education and experience.
- We may require registration as a professional engineer by the NC of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
