Full-Time Engineer III – Roadway Design – 2 Openings!
Job Description
- Assist in the management of a team of engineers in the development and review roadway design plans.
- Prepare and review roadway design plans and public meeting maps throughout the project delivery process using sound engineering judgement.
- Prepare and review quantities calculations used to generate cost estimates for the allocation of funds for Transportation Improvement projects (TIPs).
- Serve as a technical expert on roadway design questions from consultants, divisions, and other units to clarify design requirements.
- Assist in the development of roadway design scopes of services and development of project schedules for internal and consultant-led projects.
- Assist in the preparation and negotiation of work estimates for roadway design work with consultants.
- Evaluate consultant performance on roadway design submittals.
- Assist our technical design lead for projects developed by internal staff to identify potential project risks, ensure they have been appropriately coordinated with other technical leads, and are resolved.
- Advise and counsel junior engineers, and other staff in their day-to-day work to ensure a team approach.
- Identify and provide training and professional development opportunities to the team, including Transportation Engineering Associates and summer interns, to ensure they are growing as engineers and professionals.
- Knowledge of civil engineering principles – especially relating to highway design, AASHTO guidance, Roadway Design Manual, Bridge Policy, and NCDOT standard drawings/Specifications.
- Experience developing and reviewing engineer design plans/details to determine compliance/compatibility with construction/engineering principles and maintenance standards, codes, and statues.
- Communication skills to work with others and consult with senior professionals to develop alternative solutions on complex design issues.
- Management experience to direct the work of and train junior engineers and Transportation Engineering Associates.
- Computer skills using Bentley highway design software and workspaces (MicroStation, GeoPak, Open Roads Designer, and Corridor Modeling).
- Experience establishing and tracking progress of project deliverables to ensure timely completion.
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, and
- 4+ years of relevant experience; or
- An equivalent combination of education and experience.
- We may require you to be registered as a professional engineer by the NC Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
