Full-Time Engineer II – Roadway Design
Job Description
- Review and develop roadway design submittals throughout the project delivery process.
- Coordinate with our technical and Project Management units, Divisions, and Design Build to complete tasks
- Provide roadway design expertise.
- Review and prepare roadway designs for preliminary, right of way, and final construction plans for bridge replacements, widening projects, interchanges in rural and urban areas.
- Apply your computer skills in computer aided drafting and design (CADD) software like Microstation, GEOPAK, Corridor Modeling, and OpenRoads Designer (ORD).
- Ensure roadway designs comply with guidance in the Policy on Geometric Design of Highways and Streets, Roadside Design Guide, Roadway Design Manual, Subregional Tier Guidelines, NCDOT Standard Specifications and Standard Drawings, and other NCDOT policies and procedures.
- Calculate and review quantities used for the development of construction estimates.
- Review/prepare corridor public hearing maps and design public meeting maps to support public involvement meetings.
- Develop survey mapping limits.
- Assist in the preparation of work estimates.
- Train junior engineers and transportation engineering associates to develop their skills in the review and design of roadway design plans and construction estimates.
- Computer skills in design software such as Microstation, Geopak, Corridor Modeling and OpenRoads Designer (ORD).
- Knowledge of civil engineering principles related to highway design, NCDOT policies and procedures, and AASHTO guidelines.
- Experience preparing roadway design plans and construction estimates for the functional, preliminary, right of way, and final construction plans.
- Demonstrated ability to review engineered plans and details to determine compliance and compatibility with construction and engineering principles, designs, and statutes.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills to work with junior engineers and consult with higher-level professionals to discuss alternative solutions.
- Working knowledge of the organization objectives of the unit and Department.
- Ability to evaluate moderately-complex project specifications for completeness, compatibility, compliance with engineering principles, standards, codes, and design needs.
- Ability to perform reviews/audits to ensure that proper procedures are followed.
- Ability to develop and review moderately-complex projects for completeness, compatibility, and compliance with engineering principles and design needs and standards.
- Ability to identify and resolve project changes.
- Ability to make recommendations and decisions on non-routine engineering matters or other areas requiring technical engineering expertise.
- Consulting skills to work with internal and external customers related to the specific project.
- Ability to develop and/or create information products and develop/implement short-term strategies.
- We may require registration as a professional engineer by the NC Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
- Bachelors Degree in engineering, and
- 3+ years of relevant experience; or
- An equivalent combination of education and experience.
