Part-Time Engagement and Participation Manager

Job Description

We are seeking an organised and motivated Engagement and Participation Manager, part-time (three days p/week) to contribute to our work as the UK’s charity for the advancement of literature, engaging audiences in the RSL’s outreach programmes, particularly for young people and in prisons. As Engagement and Participation Manager, you will lead on the Society’s current outreach programmes and develop new initiatives to grow RSL audiences under-served by contemporary literary culture, and engage people through innovative participation models.

The successful candidate will have knowledge of current issues in literature and at least two years’ experience of engagement and participation/outreach programme design and management, preferably within a literature context. They will have exceptional interpersonal skills, and will thrive working independently alongside colleagues in our small tight-knit staff team. The Society has a strong team ethic and the successful applicant will work towards the organisation’s wider aims, identifying areas for growth and development of their work alongside colleagues and Trustees.

Main aims of the post

  • To engage the public in literature by designing, programming and delivering the RSL’s high-quality engagement and participation outreach programmes, online and in person, when safe to do so.
  • To encourage and engage young people in literature by planning and delivering the RSL young people’s outreach programme with state schools across the UK and developing new outreach projects.
  • To encourage and engage prison residents in literature by planning and delivering the RSL outreach programme in UK prisons and developing new outreach projects to serve these communities.
  • To maintain and develop partnerships across engagement and participation outreach activities.
  • To ensure that the diversity of RSL engagement and participation outreach activities is foundational in programming.
  • To assist the Director in raising funds to support the engagement and participation outreach programmes, e.g. by liaising with event sponsors and making funding applications to trusts and foundations.

Main duties

  • To deliver the RSL’s young people’s engagement and participation outreach programmes, liaising with partner organisations, schools and RSL Fellows to organise workshops and digital resources.
  • To engage, liaise with, and brief speakers for RSL engagement and participation outreach programmes. To manage all logistics of the RSL’s online and in-person engagement and participation outreach programmes, including managing virtual platforms, registrations, contributors’ travel and accommodation, venue hire, AV, photographers, and recordings.
  • To develop the RSL’s online content for teachers and schools while in-person visits are not possible.
  • To work with the Marketing and Administration Assistant to promote and share project-specific publications and competitions.
  • To work with partners and Fellows in developing the RSL’s new prisons engagement and participation outreach programme.
  • To research and implement evaluation methods for the outreach programme, consulting with relevant partners; to use information from evaluation to improve outreach work.
  • To take a pro-active approach to ensure the accessibility of RSL engagement and participation outreach programmes.
  • To work with the Director to research and develop new initiatives to expand the RSL’s engagement and participation outreach programme; to work in developing current partnerships and engaging new partner organisations.

Salary: £29,500-£31,500 pro rata, dependent on experience

Terms: Part-time, three days per week, one-year contract with opportunity to extend

Place of work: Option to work in London office or fully remote, must be UK-based
