Full-Time Energy Equity Lead

trcpdx – Posted by trcpdx Portland, Oregon, United States

Job Description

TRC Advanced Energy (TRC) is a nationally known energy efficiency consultancy. TRC collaborates with clients to develop and implement market transforming programs and initiatives that promote energy efficiency, renewable energy, and green building in multiple market sectors across the US and around the world. These initiatives reduce energy costs, improve the health and safety conditions of buildings, while also helping the environment by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. TRC acts nationally to address some of our country’s most challenging problems: global climate change and energy independence.

TRC is seeking an Energy Equity Lead to support the delivery of a large commercial energy efficiency program (program) in Oregon and SW Washington. Through the program, we deliver technical assistance and cash incentives to customers in commercial facilities and buildings to help make electric and natural gas energy efficiency upgrades possible.

Historically, the program has struggled to effectively engage Priority Communities – comprised of individuals who identify as Black, Indigenous, and People of Color, those whose primary language is not English, those who live in rural communities, and those navigating low incomes. In response to this and in support of our client’s diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) goals, TRC developed a stakeholder group – the Community Based Liaisons (CBL) Network – within the program to elevate, influence, and accelerate AEI initiatives, and secure critical new customers and savings streams to support customers in Priority Communities throughout Oregon and SW Washington. The Energy Equity Lead is a new position that will oversee this work and collaborate directly with the CBL Network, equity subconsultants, program implementation team members, and our client to operationalize equity practices throughout the program.

We are looking for a passionate, diplomatic, and experienced lead who knows how to navigate existing systems to make effective change. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong understanding of energy equity issues, effective strategies for engagement with Priority Communities, and consensus building within a complex, multi-stakeholder environment. This is an opportunity to lead a dynamic, high-impact endeavor as part of an influential, mission-oriented practice.

This job is located in Portland, Oregon. Candidates based within driving distance of the Portland metro may be considered if they have the ability to travel for in-person engagements at least monthly. The position reports to TRC’s Energy Equity Director and will not have direct reports initially, but may do so in the future. Over time, this role may extend to support equity offerings in other markets.

TRC is committed to promoting diversity and equity within the clean energy sector. Different backgrounds and perspectives are essential to the utility of the future, and we are working to empower candidates of the global majority, disabled, women, and LGBTQIA2+ persons in the field of energy project management.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with and manage relationships, expectations, and outcomes among program team, subcontractors, and client
  • Lead equity-related strategic planning for the program
  • Oversee and implement strategic equity-focused activities and deliverables
  • Expand community-based funding and outreach opportunities
  • Manage subconsultant contracts and performance
  • Develop and present equity reports
  • Approximate allocation of time: 30% strategic planning, 30% relationship management, 40% implementation oversight
  • Occasional travel within Oregon and SW Washington ~15% of the time

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED, required; associates or bachelors degree in cultural studies, sociology, or other applicable discipline preferred
  • A demonstrated understanding of inequities and solutions that impact Priority Communities, ideally within the context of energy and/or utilities, deep knowledge of energy burden preferred
  • Keen understanding of and ability to facilitate proactive discussions related to racism, equity, privilege, and power dynamics
  • Experience managing client relationships, subcontractors, and internal team members
  • Significant experience working with stakeholder groups comprised of racially and ethnically diverse individuals
  • 5+ years of experience leading or contributing to key strategies and projects addressing the above topics
  • 7+ total years of relevant work experience
  • Accredited certification in diversity, equity, and inclusion a plus
  • Patient, empathetic and resilient people person
  • Adept at active listening, boundary setting, collaborative problem solving, and conflict resolution
  • Ability to facilitate cooperation among stakeholders with competing priorities

  • Critical thinker, focused on actions and outcomes, with strong business acumen and track record of fostering change within dynamic environments
  • Ability to manage multiple complex, parallel-track projects
  • Skilled in MS Office Word, Excel and PowerPoint
