Full-Time Energy Associate

Job Description

General Overview: At the Climate Reality Project, we come to work every day to help solve the climate crisis. We do it by working from the ground up, empowering people and communities worldwide to fight for their future and together drive a just transition to clean energy.

Research and analysis conducted by our Science and Solutions team is a core component of this effort. As part of that team, the Energy Associate’s primary duties are researching, tracking, analyzing, and evaluating energy markets, electricity generation and delivery systems, and existing and emerging clean energy technologies. The ideal candidate will have an expert-level understanding of how energy markets work, the role of renewable energy in the electrical grid, factors driving cost competitiveness of renewable energy, and the barriers to transitioning to renewable sources. In addition, this position identifies promising climate and clean energy solutions, climate finance mechanisms, and important areas of new research and other key information or trends in conventional and clean energy.

 

This person is the primary internal expert advising leadership and staff designing or executing projects, campaigns, or other activities related to energy systems, energy policy, energy economics and markets, utility economics and policy, power sector reforms, clean energy finance, and market-based approaches to climate and clean energy solutions.

Successful applicants will be asked to show proof that they can legally work in the United States.

Duties and Responsibilities
In this role, you will:

  • Advise internal and external stakeholders on matters relating to energy policy, energy economics and markets, utility economics and regulation/policy, power sector reforms, clean energy finance, energy poverty and justice, clean energy technologies, and other climate change solutions.
  • Monitor, track, analyze and communicate developments in U.S. and international climate and energy policy, including in the political, legislative, administrative or executive realm.
  • Study and make recommendations about organizational positions on emerging or rapidly evolving areas of energy technology, energy policy, energy systems, energy markets, utility operations, power sector reforms, clean energy finance and other climate change solutions.
  • Identify trends, campaigns, events or other developments in such fields that the organization should be aware of and indicate why these are relevant.

 

Qualifications

You’d be great for this role if:

  • You have a master’s degree plus 1 to 3 years’ work experience in energy markets, energy economics, energy finance, or environmental science with a primary focus on clean energy.
  • You don’t have a master’s degree but have a bachelor’s degree in the above fields plus 3-5 years relevant work experience.
  • You exhibit demonstrably strong quantitative skills and ease with calculations.
  • You possess excellent attention to detail and a passion for accuracy.
  • You are a strong writer with equally strong verbal skills.
  • You are able to work independently, meet deadlines, and manage work on multiple ongoing projects simultaneously.
  • You have the flexibility to accommodate irregular and sometimes long work hours.
  • Experience and awareness of cultural diversity is important to you and you have the ability to work effectively with a diverse group of individuals and organizations.
  • Knowledge of and a passion and dedication for climate change and solving the climate crisis is critical to you.

Salary and Benefits

  • Salary range is $58,000-$69,000 and will be determined based on experience.
  • Excellent benefits including medical, dental, vision and life insurance, 401(k) with no vesting period and a company match, mobile phone reimbursement, 13 paid annual holidays plus the office closes with pay for full-time employees during our holiday break from Christmas Eve through New Year’s Day.
