Job Description

Position Title: Employment Specialist (Family Fund)

Reports to: Division Director – AimHire

Category: Regular (Full-Time); Exempt

Location: 4713 Wisconsin Ave NW, Washington, DC 20016; Temporary Remote Setting

Hours: 9:00am-5:00pm

Friendship Place is nonprofit organization, serving the Washington, DC region, empowering individuals and families experiencing or at risk of homelessness to rebuild their lives with the involvement of the community. Friendship Place offers the most effective model for addressing homelessness, with innovative, customized programs that have positive, demonstrable results and a lasting impact on the community and beyond. Our programs are person-focused – individualized to meet the needs and goals of individuals, families, youth/young adults and Veterans experiencing homelessness. We provide outreach, hospitality, health care, case management, housing, job placement services, and advocacy.

Summary:

Under the vision and leadership of the AimHire Division Director, the Employment Specialist provides workforce development services to family households experiencing homelessness and in need of job readiness supports, career development, and/or other employment support services.  The position will support a caseload up to 25 families experiencing homelessness in DC, Maryland, and Virginia, and referred to AimHire for supportive services.  The Employment Specialist must be capable of working with participants of all ages (18-60+), diverse backgrounds, and carry a working knowledge of the needs of working family households (incl. childcare barriers, benefits, etc.)  Through collaboration with the AimHire Job Developer, the position will strive to support families with entering the workforce, returning to work, and increasing access to work opportunities.  This is a grant funded position supported through the Bezos Day One Family Fund that was awarded to Friendship Place in December 2020.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Employment Services:

1. Ascertain participant employability by assessing participant’s education, work experience, and motivation; Assess other needs including housing, mental and medical health, and other barriers to stable employment.

2. Provide job readiness training and preparation, including resume/cover letter writing, mock interview coaching, and networking tips; help participants develop and achieve career goal plans

3. Assist participants in obtaining education and certifications as needed that increase employability and are based on their career goals

4. Provide coaching and resources to help participants maintain stable employment

5. Collaborate with the Job Developer to connect participants to job opportunities with employer connections. Implements feedback from Job Developer in managing participant’s goal plans

6. Assess additional supportive services needs (housing, food, medical/behavioral health care, public benefits) of participants and collaborate with providers and key stakeholders to ensure wrap-around services.

Outreach and Networking:

1. Recruit new participants through employment and resource fairs

2. Develop and maintain partnerships with other service providers and employers across the DC Metro Region (DC/MD/VA)

3. Ensure that employers are engaged and supportive of placed participants; Offer training support as needed to employer partners

Administrative:

1. Analyze program data and trends to inform changes to service delivery and program processes and procedures

2. Conduct post-placement retention follow-up and support check-ins

3. Participates in the development and implementation of training that supports families with service providers, employers, and other key stakeholders.

4. Regularly inputs necessary information into program databases (HMIS, Salesforce and/or NetSuite); maintains and updates electronic and physical participant files per program guidelines

For Friendship Place:

• Participate in the planning and development of new projects

• Connect, collaborate, build, and maintain positive relationships with external agencies

• Actively participate in staff meetings, supervisions,  and training

• Assists with volunteers when necessary.

• Perform other duties as assigned.

Education/Experience:

• Bachelor’s Degree (Human/Social Services field, Education, Human Resources or Business, preferred)

• Minimum of two (2) years prior work experience in workforce development and experience with people experiencing homelessness (required)

Qualifications:

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills and strong attention to detail

• Strong decision-making and problem-solving skills; ability to be flexible and implement innovative solutions that help participants achieve success

• Ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced dynamic environment

• Model professional behavior, boundaries and confidentiality practices

• Bi-lingual Service Delivery, a plus

Working conditions

Position will spend time between office/desk settings, traveling to meet with participants and providers across the service area, and attend meetings/engagements with key stakeholders.  Travel time for position responsibilities may consist up to 25% of time.

 

Physical and Environmental Requirements

Position requires split time between an office setting and traveling to engagements via car or public transportation.  Employee must be able to sit for extended periods of time with repetitive motion and positions.  Employee must be able to operate a motorized vehicle.  Some lifting may be required (up to 20-25lbs).

 

Background checks

The selected candidate will be required to pass a criminal history background check, CFSA Child Abuse/Neglect Background Check, FBI fingerprinting and drug testing (and any additional tests/checks per grant requirements)

Specific Requirements:

Employee must have a valid driver’s license and personal vehicle to carry out job duties and responsibilities.

Other Details

  • Compensation: The hiring pay range is between $44,720-$49,764 annually.  Depending on the position, the starting hourly pay rate or annual salary is based on a step system.  A candidate’s starting pay determination is made based on meeting the basic position requirements, and current completed education, credentials and/or work experience.  Please Note: The step system is set and not open to pay negotiation.  Before moving forward in the selection process, interested applicants are encouraged to discuss starting pay eligibility with the Human Resources (Talent) Department.
