DONOR RELATIONS MANAGER

DEPARTMENT SUMMARY

The IONS Development team is charged with securing funding and building awareness to support the important mission of IONS. IONS has a robust, passionate and loyal donor base with donors located throughout the US and abroad. The IONS Development Team is charged with building long-term relationships with donors, expanding its pool of donors at all levels of giving, and highlighting the many ways that our programs and services—and the donors who support them—advance the IONS mission. We emphasize service, gratitude, and the development of meaningful, long-term relationships with donors at all levels.

POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the Director of Advancement and working closely with members of the Development Team and cross-organizational partners, the Donor Relations Manager works to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward a portfolio of major donors with giving capacity in the range of $10,000 up to $1M. The DRM  will be an essential thought partner for IONS Development staff as it seeks to sustain and improve upon new and existing fundraising practices, including but not limited to moves management for existing donors, prospecting and lead development, campaign planning, legacy giving, and stewardship. In addition the DRM will play an important role in preparing the organization for the upcoming IONS50 Campaign.

Competitive benefits and salary provided. This is a remote-based position with donor and organizational travel required, with potential for as high as 50% of time.

ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Develop Donor Engagement Plans including cultivation and solicitation strategies for prospects in consultation with the Director of Advancement, CEO and other organizational leaders
  • Assume responsibility for the qualification, cultivation, solicitation, acknowledgement, and stewardship of a dynamic portfolio of approximately 125-150 donors and prospects including in-house or video conference meetings, donor events, and travel for face-to-face meetings
  • Serve as an organizational ambassador while traveling.
  • Keep well-informed of organizational mission, strategy and priorities in order to educate prospects about IONS direction and needs.
  • Recommend and facilitate strategic meetings for donors with IONS leadership as assigned, e.g., Director, CEO, Trustees, and IONS scientists.
  • Provide input, support and project management when needed for Development staff on appeals, special campaigns, and content for digital, print, and in-house communications publications.
  • Provide significant support and direction for cultivation and stewardship events
  • Assist with other projects, activities, and events as assigned.
  • Maintain thorough records of prospect communications and contacts within the donor database.
  • Participate in professional development as opportunities arise to update field knowledge and skills.

Experience and Qualities Required:

  • The ideal candidate for this position will have a minimum of 5 years of proven major gifts development experience in a nonprofit setting with a keen understanding of all facets of a sophisticated major gifts program and related best practices. Planned giving experience is a plus. Campaign experience preferred.
  • Ability to work cross-functionally with understanding and support of other areas within the organization, and maintain good working relationships.
  • Related experience in such areas as sales, customer service, grant management or community development work will be considered.
  • Understanding of sensitivity needed and awareness of diversity in all forms in support of donor relationship development.
  • Experienced with customer relationship management software such as Salesforce and Microsoft Office Suite programs including Excel, Word, and Power Point. Committed to accuracy and timeliness in detailed data entry.
  • A passion for the mission of IONS and a basic understanding of the various facets of noetic sciences and engagement practices.
  • Understanding of the importance of documentation and timely inputting of donor contacts.
  • Sense of humor appreciated.
