About the Investigative Journalism Foundation
The
Investigative Journalism Foundation is Canada’s leading nonprofit newsroom focused on public interest journalism. We are a new kind of media outlet, built around databases on who donates to politicians across Canada, who lobbies them, and how the government spends your money.
As a nonprofit, nonpartisan media outlet, our primary purpose is to serve the public. We do this by publishing in-depth investigative journalism that speaks truth to power. Our databases are also used by other journalists, academics, policymakers and individuals seeking to increase transparency and strengthen Canadian democracy.
We believe in a collaborative model and are proud to partner with other media outlets and post-secondary institutions to ensure our journalism has as wide a reach as possible.
About this job
This is a 4-month contract position that starts in May and ends in August, with a possibility to renew, pending the availability of funding and job performance. Most of the IJF’s team is based in Toronto, but we’re happy to hear from candidates based elsewhere in Canada. We are a workplace that promotes remote and flexible work arrangements and emphasizes work-life balance.
Please note: This position is funded by Canada Summer Jobs and can only be filled by someone under 30 who has a valid Social Insurance Number and is a citizen, permanent resident, or refugee. Please check out the
detailed requirements if you’re not sure if you qualify.
Successful candidates will report to the Director of Development and be excited about working at a mission-driven nonprofit that uses journalism to strengthen Canadian democracy every day.
What you’ll do at the IJF:
1. Research potential donors, including family foundations and high-net-worth individuals, using Grant Connect, Grant Station, and other similar wealth prospecting tools.
2. Assist with the preparation of quarterly updates for existing donors. This will include collecting key performance indicators from the reporting, tech, fundraising and operations teams, and translating that data into a digestible and engaging format.
3. Write draft emails to prospective donors focused on the Investigative Journalism Foundation’s mission.
4. Explore and reach out to potential donors on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) platforms, and help manage the CSR platforms.
We’re looking for someone with:
1. Excellent writing skills. Familiarity with fundraising and non-profit conventions is good.
2. Excitement about working for a nonprofit focused on strengthening Canadian democracy.
3. Comfort with interdisciplinarity. This job requires working with developers, journalists, professors and nonprofit executives on complex questions that straddle disciplines.
4. Familiarity with CSR platforms or a willingness to learn.
Not sure you’re qualified for this job? Please apply anyway. We’re looking for talented people who share our passion for making Canada a better place. Experience matters less than a desire to learn and grow. We’re committed to building an inclusive environment and we welcome applications from individuals identifying with groups traditionally underrepresented in journalism due to gender, race, ethnicity, sexuality, indigeneity, religion, immigration background, or disability.
