Full-Time Director of Special Collections and the Curator of the Peace Collection

Swarthmore College has an immediate opening for the Director of Special Collections and Curator of the Peace Collection. This role provides strategic and administrative leadership for Swarthmore College Special Collections (which include the Friends Historical Library, the College Archives and Records Management Program, and a collection of rare and artists’ books); and serves as the Curator of the Swarthmore College Peace Collection (SCPC), an internationally known special library and archives documenting non-governmental efforts for nonviolent social change with a focus on women’s contributions to these movements.
Essential Responsibilities:
The Director of Special Collections is a new role and the successful candidate will be tasked with creating a holistic vision and culture for the special collections while honoring their individual historical missions and responsibilities. This position will provide leadership for the collections, services, and programs of the Special Collections. The Director will work with the College Librarian and with Development staff fostering new donor relations and grant development; they will also work with colleagues in the TriCollege Consortium (Bryn Mawr and Haverford Colleges) on collaborative projects, grant seeking, and technology infrastructure strategy. Special Collections includes approximately eight full-time staff, as well as a number of part-time and limited term/grant funded staff..
Curator of the Swarthmore College Peace Collection is a long-standing and endowed role. The incumbent develops the collection through work with donors and peace-related organizations, answers reference queries, and conducts in-depth research consultations.
Additional Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will be appointed as the George Cooley Curator and should have an established record of scholarship in relevant areas.
Required Qualifications:
• ALA accredited MLS with specialization in archives and/or rare materials or ACA Certified Archivist. Equivalent combination of advanced subject degree and library/archives experience may be considered.
• Established expertise in peace movements and peace history or closely related field, such as human rights.
• 5 + years experience working in special collections with evidence of increasing responsibility, leadership, and personnel supervision.
• Expert knowledge of archival collection management, public services, and preservation practices and tools.
• Strong evidence of working with students, faculty, and other scholars through instruction, research support, and outreach.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills. Commitment to professional development.
• Strong sense of leadership, initiative, and project management, with ability to work independently.
• The candidate should have already established a record of professional and scholarly accomplishment.
