Founded in 1936, the National Wildlife Federation (NWF or Federation) is America’s largest and most trusted grassroots conservation organization with 53 state/territorial affiliates and more than six million members and supporters, including hunters, anglers, gardeners, birders, hikers, campers, paddlers, and outdoor enthusiasts of all stripes. To support our mission, we are seeking a Director of Land Conservation Policy to join our Land Stewardship Team at the National Advocacy Center in Washington, DC.  (Due to COVID-19 all employees are working remotely until at least September).

In this role, you will be responsible for leading NWF’s work to develop and enact into law, federal policy tools promoting the conservation of private lands.  This work will help the United States achieve the national 30 X 30 goal of conserving 30 percent of our lands and waters by 2030. The Director of Land Conservation Policy reports to the Associate Vice President for Land Stewardship and will supervise contractors and a Land Conservation Coordinator (to be hired). This position leads the National Wildlife Federation’s work to convene experts, colleague groups, and NWF staff to develop policy proposals, ensure all proposals are equitable and just to underserved communities, bring together broad and diverse coalitions to support and advocate for these proposals, design and implement an advocacy campaign to advance the proposals in Congress and lead NWF’s lobbying on capital hill on this issue.  This position is an 18- month, term position with the possibility of extension or of becoming permanent.

Your primary responsibilities will include:

• Lead the Federation’s work on securing federal policy tools to promote private land conservation, serving as lead lobbyist and campaign director, including coordinating activities with regional offices, affiliates, science team, agriculture policy team, communications, and field teams.
• Take the lead in hiring and supervising a Land Conservation Policy Coordinator to support the work of the campaign.
• Work with Associate Vice President for Land Stewardship, Associate Vice President for Policy and Government Affairs, Director of Agriculture Policy, the Environmental Justice team to ensure coordination and compatibility with other NWF goals and policy efforts.
• Develop broad coalitions to help develop and advance land conservation policy tools and represent NWF in these coalitions.
• Analyze emerging issues associated with land conservation policy and recommends proposed NWF policy positions
• Take the lead in contracting and supervising outside experts to help provide input into development of policy tools.
• Work with NWF Communications, field, online, and affiliate affairs staff to develop and oversee implementation of campaign to advance conservation policy tools.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree required; Advanced degree preferred in economics, law, policy, or related field.
• A minimum of at least 7 years of professional experience, including at least 5 years of policy experience.
• Outstanding written and oral communications skills, including the ability to translate highly technical information for a public audience and for Congressional offices
• Strong interpersonal and networking skills; ability to work well with diverse interests, including hunting and angling groups, environmental groups, land conservation organizations, private sector investors, minority landowner groups, and agricultural and forestry interests
• Knowledge of legislative process and conservation and/or tax policy
• Experience lobbying and relationships with key offices
• Technical knowledge regarding land conservation mechanisms and related federal policy

• Knowledge and/or experience with tax and real estate policy
• Experience developing and leading coalitions
• Supervisory experience

Travel Requirements:

Travel is variable, dependent on funding and opportunities. On average, travel frequency will be around 3-5 times a year.

Compensation and Benefits:

The salary range for this position is low 80s – to low 100s, depending on experience.
