Full-Time Director of Innovation & Technology
Job Description
The Director of Innovation and Technology is the guardian and champion of ASLA’s entrepreneurial spirt and will oversee the design, development, and implementation of information systems, software applications, data infrastructure, data access and support systems and engagement platforms to meet current needs of our members and to lay the foundation for our future – providing tools to enable ASLA to deliver its valuable content to its members in new formats. The Director shares ASLA’s desire to be a leader in the use of technology, software and data – particularly focused on mission driven work to drive outcomes and maximize our members’ experience and change the world.
Key Responsibilities:
IT Innovation: Spearhead the development, publishing and maintenance of the organization’s information architecture, as well as a roadmap for its future development, ensuring that it matches and supports the short- and long-term strategic direction of ASLA. Adapt to industry disruptions and maintain a curiosity to learn and communicate potential relevant new technologies coming on line or in development and the acuity to see the implications and possible uses of such technologies.
Strategic Collaboration: Collaborate with organization leaders to develop an integrated organizational information technology strategy including data systems and programs; lead and manage the team to implement the strategic vision – evaluating and implementing systems and infrastructure and ensuring technologies are used efficiently and securely.
Innovative Solutions: Inspire creative thinking in employees and find ways to nurture innovative thinking across all areas of ASLA; champion the role of technology in achieving the organization’s mission and lead the effort to improve the impact of our work by creating more powerful analytic tools; design, develop and establish an analytics culture of measuring for success; brainstorm across teams to discover new solutions and approaches to old problems.
Network Development: Direct the effective delivery and maintenance of secured networks and servers; develop emergency and disaster recovery systems and processes; manage and administer Microsoft 365 and active directory for Outlook and ensure availability of data and network services and security; plan security policies and promote information security system-wide.
Innovation/Culture Management: Lead open innovation in areas/technologies that support ASLA’s mission, using the front end of the innovation process to identify, research and screen potential platform technologies and develop the business case to reach decisions on opportunities; help formulate effective new ideas and innovative strategies for product development, marketing, branding or business opportunities using technology trends as a driver for change.
Technology Integration: Set and manage timelines for evaluation, development, integration and deployment of all technical, CMS, CRM, web, and mobile services – working with colleagues, consultants and information engineers to find solutions to manage business activities and the implementation of new technology.
Vendor Management: Provide direct oversight and management for all IT team members, vendors and consultants.
Budget Development: Partner with the CFO to develop operating and capital planning budgets for current and future technology investments to ensure that the timing of resource needs is aligned with available funding.

The Innovation & Technology (IT) department of ASLA is committed to applying the best of innovation to the association community and believes that technology, in the right hands and with the right design principles, can be an incredible force for change. We are strategic technology partners, innovation champions and implementation experts. The innovation and technology team work throughout the year to ensure all information systems support the mission, people and operations of the organization. The department also is responsible for managing network support functions and cyber-security for the organization.
- Demonstrated senior technology and innovation leadership (10+ plus years’ experience).
- Bachelor’s degree/Certification in Computer Science/Engineering or equivalent experience in applicable field required; advanced degree preferred.
- Demonstrated experience as advisor to executive and senior leadership teams.
- Proven track record of delivering on a technology solutions agenda that contributed to a culture of creativity, entrepreneurship and excellence.
- Demonstrated strong leadership, collaboration, project management, problem-solving, change management and influencing skills.
- Demonstrated experience in strategic systems design and development; innovative service delivery & operational management.
- Prior not-for-profit management experience preferred with a track-record of success in creating integrated technology solutions.
The ideal candidate will be an inspirational leader with excellent communications skills who is approachable and adaptable – an experienced information technology leader with solid career progression across multiple technology and operations roles. Experience with leading transformational change and building a service and outcomes-based approach to technology solutions, secured infrastructures, future planning, collaboration and training. A strategic and tactical leader with strong business and technical acumen who will “roll up their sleeves” and drive positive results.
