Full-Time Director of HR & DEI
Job Description
Reports To: Chief Operating Officer & General Counsel
Department: Human Resources
Job Summary:
The Director of HR & DEI will oversee DAGA’s HR administration, including payroll, benefits, recruitment, hiring, onboarding/offboarding, and employee relations matters. The Director will also work with DAGA leadership to develop and implement a DEI strategy to ensure that DAGA continues to exercise its core values.
The Director must be able to work independently and be a highly organized and effective team player. Must be resourceful, flexible, extremely detail-oriented, and comfortable using new technologies. The Director will lead a small team and be expected to assist in all areas of HR and DEI. The Director should be patient, responsive, and committed to DAGA’s mission. The Director will serve approximately 40 employees.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Oversees the Human Resources Department.
- Manages recruitment, hiring, onboarding, and offboarding of employees.
- Supervises the Human Resources Generalist.
- Provides constructive and timely performance evaluations.
- Works with Executive Team to develop and implement a DEI strategy.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Salary range is $130,000 – $140,000.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Strategic and Critical Initiatives
- Assess the current Human Resources program end-to-end, complete a report evaluating it, and present an assessment to the Executive Team with a plan for short-term and long-term goals;
- Oversee DAGA’s transition to a new Human Resources Information System (HRIS);
- Administer DAGA’s semi-annual review and feedback process and integrate evaluations with the HRIS system;
- Define an approach and program for staff development;
- Be a partner to the Executive Team by acting as the leading voice in supporting the organization’s commitment to insuring an equity lens on strategic and tactical decision-making for the good of the organization and its staff and for the alignment of our greater mission with our day-to-day work;
- Benefits administration
- Process payroll and maintain personnel files for DAGA employees;
- Oversee employee benefits programs and the open enrollment process;
- Review benefits programs and recommend changes as needed;
- Human Resources
- Provide support and guidance to the organization and/or individuals when complex, specialized, or sensitive questions and issues arise;
- Manage HR related budgets, including tracking HR expenses and shepherding them through the approval process;
- Update the DAGA Employee Handbook as needed from time to time;
- Maintain compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations in concert with our COO/GC and external legal counsel, and recommend improvements to achieve best practices over time;
- Work with DAGA Executive team and/or legal counsel on disciplinary issues as needed;
- DEI
- Further the development of a DEI program and execute strategies and action plans that support the program’s success;
- Lead ongoing internal assessments to identify and overcome barriers to DE&I goals and achieve excellence;
- Provides leadership for talent acquisition and retention strategies that result in a diverse workforce and the development of programs and services that support, develop, leverage, and recognize the strengths and contributions of all employees;
- Recruitment
- Review the hiring process for DAGA, suggest improvements, and manage the process for recruitment, onboarding, and offboarding;
- Work with departments to ensure current roles and new hires fit with organizational needs, oversee the writing of job descriptions, recommend the best approaches to attracting talent, and work with departments to secure the best available talent for the organization;
- Supervise a Human Resources generalist
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Demonstrated leadership and strategic experience

- Proven ability to meet critical project deadlines
- Proficient in all Microsoft Office applications including Outlook, and other communication tools such as Wickr and Signal
- Commitment to DAGA’s mission to elect Democratic Attorneys General across the nation
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree; advanced degree preferred
- At least 5 years’ experience in Human Resources; 7-10 years preferred
- Experience with, and knowledge of, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion principles and programs; DEI certification from a recognized program a plus
- Experience handling sensitive employee relations matters
The position will be located at DAGA’s Washington, DC office and is not eligible to be a remote position.
