The Nature Conservancy’s Maryland/DC chapter is on the front lines of the fight against climate change. Nature is our best defense to adapt to a changing world and we work on the ground to deliver large-scale conservation projects that have the greatest outcomes for people and nature. Science is at the core of everything we do—we constantly learn and adapt to yield the greatest conservation returns. Yet our actions alone are not enough. We leverage policy and partnerships to scale our impact. Our core programs aim to transform agriculture, restore Appalachian forests, build green cities, and strengthen our coasts – all in the face of a changing climate. In addition, we engage directly in policy to reduce emissions that cause climate change.

The Director of Government Relations supports the conservation goals of TNC’s Maryland/DC chapter by planning, coordinating, and implementing initiatives to affect government policy in Maryland and the District of Columbia.  The Director will also have regular contact and build relationships with Maryland’s Congressional delegation to support the federal policy priorities of The Nature Conservancy, leading the development and implementation of the MD/DC chapter’s policy agenda. They build close working relationships with members of Maryland’s General Assembly and relevant State Agencies and build close working relationships with Maryland’s Congressional delegation to support the federal policy priorities of TNC. Reporting to the MD/DC Deputy Executive Director, the Director tracks legislative and administrative initiatives and policies and strategically advances those that are relevant to the Chapter’s conservation strategies. The Director collaborates closely with chapter conservation staff to develop policy strategies to further conservation goals around clean water and climate change across Maryland as well as those that directly impact Baltimore City and Washington, D.C. In coordination with the Conservation & Climate Policy Analyst, the Director proactively develops novel legislative and regulatory approaches and advocates for their adoption.  The Director also They coordinate the efforts of Maryland/DC chapter trustees and volunteers to advocate on behalf of the Conservancy.

Responsibilities and scope include: Being accountable for developing and meeting departmental strategic goals and objectives; supervise professional staff with responsibility for performance management, training and development; applying a diversified knowledge of policy practices and strategies to support TNC conservation priorities; working collaboratively in a complex and matrixed organizational environment, including within a cross-functional interdisciplinary team; developing relationships and working effectively with corporate, government, community, and non-governmental organization partners; overall responsibility for financial management of program, including setting budgets, pursuing grants, and annual budget management; ensuring that program meets all lobbying, contractual, and legal regulations and standards; participating in and negotiates complex, high profile or sensitive agreements. May need to gain cooperation from individuals or groups (inside and outside the Conservancy) over whom there is no direct authority to accomplish program goals.
