The methodology rests on explicit, carefully sequenced instruction, building from sentences to compositions, and can be used across all grades and subject areas.

Summary

The Director of Finance, a regular, full time, exempt position, under the direct supervision of the Chief Operating Officer, leads strategic and manages operational aspects of the organization’s finances and effectively communicates the results, issues and opportunities to all stakeholders. The Director ensures compliance and sound internal controls while fostering a culture of support and collaboration with finance and across departments. The Director participates in the short- and long-term financial planning of the organization as well as the strategic planning process and quality improvement process.

This is a hybrid role that requires Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays in the office.

Responsibilities

Financial Planning: Strategy & Budget

  • Develop, along with the Co-CEOs & COO, financial strategy and plans to support growth.
  • With support from COO, set clear objectives and measures for financial performance of the organization.
  • Oversee and direct the preparation of the annual budget.
  • Oversee implementation of financial plans and annual budgets for each department.
  • Develop cash strategy and support the Board & executives’ efforts to set investment strategy.
  • Develop multi-year budgets; forecast revenue, expense and cash flow; and conduct activity-based financial analyses to compliment the organization’s operations and programs.

Financial Operations: Accounting & Finance Functions

  • Oversee all accounting and finance functions of the organization including timely completion of monthly closing process and preparation of related financial reports.
  • Assess the timeliness and accuracy of tasks performed by the team, and monitor process, progress and results.
  • Ensure all fiscal practices meet the highest standard of integrity and comply with generally accepted accounting principles and other industry standards. Manage all compliance deadlines.
  • Implement financial policies and procedures that maintain an effective internal control environment with proper segregation of duties and oversee adherence to policies.
  • Develop and maintain a system for managing fixed assets.
  • Develop and oversee adherence to allocation methodologies
  • Continually work toward promotion of efficiency and effectiveness of all finance functions, via process and workflow improvements; including investment in and implementation of technology to support automation.
  • With support from the COO as needed, negotiate and manage all banking and vendor relationships, and investment, asset, contract management; as needed work with the Board and executives to create, update and maintain cash management policies.
  • Lead annual audit preparation, liaise during all audit phases.
  • Lead the preparation of annual 990.
  • Provide accounting and financial related assistance to other departments, including participation in training staff on fiscal procedures and budget management as needed.
  • Process payroll.

Financial Monitoring, Analysis & Reporting

  • Analyze financial statements and communicate trends and emerging issues
  • Analyze budget variances and work across departments to address any significant differences.
  • Support teams to develop forecasts
  • Develop sophisticated reporting (narratives, financials, dashboards, etc.) to communicate financial results and trends.
  • Provide regular updates to various internal and external stakeholders on all finance functions and activities. (Includes attendance and presentations at staff and Board and Board committee meetings).
  • Conduct multi-year and project specific analyses to inform future planning and strategies.
  • Ensure all financial issues are accurately tracked and resolved.

Supervision: Senior Finance Manager, Finance Associate

Qualifications

  • BS in Accounting, Finance, Economic, Business of Public Administration required. CPA, MPA or MBA preferred.
  • At least 8-10 years of progressive experience with leadership responsibility in finance and administration.
  • Experience with QuickBooks online, BILL, Expensify, and Salesforce strongly preferred (or similar software)
  • Master of Microsoft Office/Google Suite including advanced Excel skills and the ability to work with/learn GoogleSheets (Google equivalent of Excel).
  • Experience in education preferred.
  • Strong understanding and application of General Accepted Accounting Principles.
  • Ability to translate detailed information and utilize advanced spreadsheet reporting tools to enhance and simplify analysis.
  • Ability to communicate in a clear, friendly, professional and proactive manner.
  • Ability to multitask and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to lead a team, build relationships and resolve conflict

Salary Range

$125,000 – $150,000, dependent on experience.
