The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) is seeking a  Director,Development to set strategy, build donor relationships and secure philanthropic funding in support of TIFF’s year-round and Festival programming. The Director leads a team focused on providing exceptional donor experiences, proposal development, broad-based and face-to-face solicitations, and adhering to stewardship requirements throughout the year.

The Director, Development reports into the VP of Advancement and manages a portfolio encompassing:

• Philanthropic giving at all levels (grassroots, recurring, intermediate, major and transformational)
• Major gifts and donor identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship employing sophisticated moves management processes and systems
• Major fundraising events, including  raising funds for the glamorous TIFF Tribute Awards presented by Bvlgari held annually during Festival
• Campaign planning support
• American Friends of TIFF relationship management

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Lead the strategy, research, development, and creation of funding requests for submission to all levels of philanthropic donors and prospects (individual, corporate, foundations)
• Design and implement identification and qualification strategies for major gift research related to potential prospects, and create donor cultivation opportunities to further major gift and annual fund development
• Consult with internal departments and  various business stakeholders  to identify and develop projects and activities for funding by providing strategic insight in matching opportunities with donor interests and connecting them with TIFF priorities and business objectives.
• Oversee all major gift cultivation, solicitation and stewardship activities
• Support annual Tribute event, especially monetization of the event and, in particular, table sales
• Create and/or oversee the preparation of all proposals, stewardship reports and other collateral documents to be used to solicit or report to donors.
• Create moves management systems and support senior staff and volunteers (especially Board) on moves and calls including briefing notes, call reports and evaluating next steps
• Play strong supporting role in preparation and execution of quarterly Board Philanthropy Committee meetings
• Develop and implement overall strategies for successful cultivation and solicitation of support from donors 
• Monitor funding secured and progress to meet annual goals 
• Provide strategic direction, develop, mentor, and supervise a team of direct reports
• Work and collaborate closely with other senior revenue generators.
• Build strong working relationships with key internal stakeholders, including programmers and other colleagues 
• Development, management and achievement of annual operating budgets.
• Lead strategy on Planned Giving opportunities, especially legacy giving
• Development and administration of departmental/giving policies and procedures to enhance operations and  compliance.

JOB GRADE & SALARY:

• Job Grade 5
• $90,000-$120,000/Annually

TARGET START DATE:

• March 13, 2023 or as available

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

• University degree, community college diploma or equivalent work experience
• Minimum10 years of progressive fundraising experience
• CFRE an asset
• Track record of success in 6 and 7 figure philanthropic gift identification, solicitation and  stewardship 
• Exceptional moves management skills
• Knowledge of Canada’s philanthropic community and network of social and professional relationships 
• Strong business acumen, leadership and project management skills 
• Proven ability to deliver results in a fast-paced, non-profit environment 
• Ability to lead and stimulate the development of new and innovative ways to improve divisional responsibilities’ contribution to TIFF’s success
• Partner negotiations 
• Strong understanding of moves management applications with Raisers’ Edge and  iWave
• Creative and flexible problem solver, and highly organized
• Excellent presentation skills and superior interpersonal skills.  Strong track record of professional relationship-building and aptitude for building the loyalty of members and donors
• Independent self-starter with negotiation skills and high initiative
• Able to respect and maintain a high degree of confidentiality
• Strong networking skills, with an ability to act with tact and diplomacy 
• Team leader, adept at negotiating organizational dynamics, coaching and counseling, with exemplary interpersonal skills
• High level of positive energy and enthusiasm
• Highly developed communication skills (written, oral, negotiation, coaching, strategic communication planning) 
• High degree of creativity, innovation, lateral thinking
• Ability to adapt to change and work in a fast-paced often pressurized environment
• Ability to perform under pressure and manage stress
• Ability to manage up and present professionally to large groups, Board of Directors, other key stakeholders
• Adaptable to a flexible work schedule including some evenings and weekends
• A passion for film
