The National Women’s Health Network (NWHN) improves the health of all women by developing and promoting a critical analysis of health issues in order to affect policy and support women’s decision-making. The NWHN serves as a watchdog and engages women in policy change efforts through interconnected grassroots organizing, network building and community education. The NWHN remains true to its feminist progressive roots by relying primarily on members and foundations for contributions and does not accept financial support from drug companies, insurance companies, manufacturers of medical devices, or tobacco companies.

Position Overview:

NWHN is in a transition period, and we need an experienced Development Director who can work with the rest of the team to shape and implement an ambitious fundraising strategy. This is a great opportunity for someone who wants not just a job but an opportunity to educate the American public about women’s health issues and hold federal agencies and institutions accountable to health topics that matter to women.
We are centrally located in Washington D.C., our staff is super friendly, mission-driven, and we have a flexible work environment. We are looking for someone who will be a go-getter, self-starter, big-picture, strategist with an eye for detail and a willingness to support the entire fundraising process as well as working collaboratively with other teams. You will have the opportunity to play a key role in expanding the development function of the organization and you should have supervisory experience and extensive fundraising knowledge.
Essential Responsibilities:
The Director of Development is responsible for conceptualizing, organizing, and implementing a comprehensive and strategic fundraising program in support of the Network’s vision, mission, and strategic priorities. The DOD serves on the executive leadership team.
Individual Giving
· Direct and implement annual and major gifts program, including planned giving
· Provide oversight of monthly digital acquisition campaigns, quarterly fundraising appeals, monthly renewal campaigns, and ongoing stewardship activities
· Identify, cultivate, solicit, and maintain a portfolio of individual donors and prospects, including planned giving donors with the capacity to give gifts of over $10,000
Foundation and Corporate Relations
· Work with the leadership team to identify foundation and sponsorship funding opportunities
· Identify, research, solicit, and maintain a portfolio of foundations, corporate partners, and sponsors with the capacity to give gifts of $2,500 to high six-figure gifts
· Fundraise for sponsorships and corporate partnerships for special fundraising events, the NWHN podcast, and other program areas
· Identify and review research reports and articles relevant to NWHN’s program areas
· Draft, edit, and ensure the timely submission of foundation proposals and reports
· Collaborate with internal NWHN departments to collect outcomes data and ensure that funding guidelines are being properly met
Special Events
· Plan and implement fundraising events, including interaction with presenters/honorees, sponsors, attendees, and staff
· Identify and research prospective honorees and speakers
· Identify, solicit, and cultivate prospective sponsors and donors
· Coordinate post-event debrief, including documentation of results and feedback
Fund Development Management
· Utilize a community-centric fundraising framework to identify and steward a diverse donor base
· Develop and analyze fundraising data and respond to identified trends
· Brief and support Executive Director to address revenue benchmarks and strategic goals
· Advise the Board of Directors, development committee, and staff on fundraising matters
· Utilize the NWHN’s strategic plan to identify and develop opportunities for fulfilling the organization’s fundraising goals; and collaborate across teams to develop the most effective systems for outreach and relationship management
· Research and stay current on women’s health topics, marketing, and fundraising trends
· Work in collaboration with the Communications team to provide insight with the goal of increasing media, marketing, and online presence to expand the organization’s donor reach
· Establish and monitor policies and procedures as related to donations
Board of Directors
· Create an annual Development Plan, in partnership with (or with input from) the Development Committee, for Board consideration and action
· Attend and report at Board meetings (travel may be required)
· Lead Board presentations and trainings as related to fundraising
· Work in partnership with Development Committee Chair to set Committee meeting agendas, appropriately engage Committee members, and to keep them abreast of progress against annual development plan
· Support Board fundraising efforts, effectively communicate and present critical funding matters
General Operations and Finance
· Actively participate in staff meetings, leadership team meetings, attend community events, and otherwise contribute to strengthening the deep roots within our community, both internally and externally
· Direct, plan, and coordinate the work of the fundraising staff, including supervision and evaluation, training, and team building
· Assist with the development, monitoring, and review of the development department budgets
· Review monthly financials with Finance Director
· Provide recommendations and suggestions during budget planning and forecasting
· Serve as additional contact point for the Finance Director regarding donations
· Monitor and ensure timely payment of pledges
· Ensure compliance with NWHN’s Gift Acknowledgment and Gift Acceptance Policies, among others
Qualifications/Requirements:
· A minimum of 10 years of direct fund development experience in the nonprofit sector with a focus on annual major gift giving and digital acquisition strategies; experience in corporate and planned giving a plus
· Solid knowledge of current and effective community centric fundraising tools, techniques, and practices as well as the tools to develop and implement strategies
· Demonstrated experience managing a personal portfolio of donors, including meaningful relationship building and proven ability to solicit and close philanthropic gifts of five-figures
· Strong working proficiency with IT and relationship management software such as Microsoft 365, Active Campaign, and Humanitru
· Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
· Ability to work independently and collaboratively with Board members, senior staff, and other stakeholders in a professional and positive manner
· Highly detail-oriented with proven ability to accomplish goals, meet deadlines, and create outcomes
· Ability to adapt easily to constantly changing situations, team player, seek opportunity in every situation, handle competing deadlines, and produce prompt and effective results
· A strong commitment to women’s health care, access, and equity with a nuanced understanding of how systemic oppressions impact communities of color and other identity groups
· Love of continuous learning
· Ability to work some evenings and weekends
