Full-Time Director of Claims, Workers’ Compensation

Job Description

Our Workers’ Compensation Claims team is looking for a Director of Claims to join our team who has experience with claims management and has a passion for mentoring a hybrid team.  Our Workers’ Compensation team supports our members, brokers, and counsel on claims management and works as a team collaboratively across our four offices in California.  Do you have extensive experience with claims management, including complex claims, in the healthcare industry?  Do you enjoy mentoring a team of claims professionals?  If so, we are looking for you!  This position is eligible to telecommute up to 4 days a week from home, but must be located a commutable distance to our Granite Bay, CA office.

ABOUT THIS ROLE:

In this role, you will report to the Senior Director of Claims, Workers’ Compensation.  As a member of the Workers’ Compensation management team, you will collaborate to implement WC team processes to ensure high quality claims handling and obtain optimal business results.  Additionally, you will assist with the operational management of your assigned Workers’ Compensation Team, including the productivity, efficiency, and accuracy and continuing education of supervisors, examiners, assistants and administrative staff.

 

IN THIS ROLE YOU WILL:

  • Possess in depth knowledge of the California Labor Code practices & procedures
  • Seek out necessary metrics to assist in managing the WC Claims Team
  • Review and prepare a response to Audit Unit and OSIP requests, or Audit complaints
  • Prepare state required reports, such as Annual Report of Inventory, OSIP Annual Report and educational filings
  • Provide leadership, mentoring, coaching and training of staff to include addressing improvement opportunities, personnel issues and performance gaps
  • Plan, prioritize and assign WC Claims workload to ensure prompt and effective claim handling
  • Collaborate with Employee Safety to provide training and education to our members
  • Under guidance, develop and maintain guidelines for settlement authority
  • Provide input to Sr. Director of Claims for WC team forecasting and planning
  • Monitor and participates in quality control and reviews
  • Monitor and evaluate workflow, performance, competencies and training of the workers’ compensation staff
  • Monitor high-profile claims
  • Other duties as assigned or required

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job
  • Ten (10) or more years’ insurance industry experience, including at least eight (8) years in Workers’ Compensation to include experience with the state auditing process
  • Five (5) years’ direct management experience including coaching and mentoring
  • TPA experience preferred
  • 5 years’ BETA experience strongly preferred
  • Self-Insured Certificate and WCCP preferred
  • Advanced knowledge of the insurance industry, claims and the insurance legal and regulatory environment
  • Strong leadership and management skills; Ability to mentor, coach, encourage and motivate staff
  • Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communications skills, including presentation skills
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and customer service skills
  • Demonstrated strong analytical and interpretive skills
  • Experience managing multiple simultaneous projects
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills related to project management
  • Ability to facilitate, plan organize, prioritize and direct multiple projects concurrently

 

TRAVEL

  • Must have reliable and safe transportation to other BETA offices and business partners. Employee(s) using their own personal vehicle for business use, must maintain:  a valid California driver’s license, proper vehicle registration and California’s minimum automobile insurance coverage limits
  • A moderate amount of travel is required for this position

 

 

 

Hiring base salary range:  up to $150,000, depending on experience plus full benefits package

  • Note the amount listed is the base pay range; additional compensation may be available for this position.
