Friends of the Children is a nonprofit that is breaking the cycle of generational poverty by helping children facing the most obstacles to create a new story. We do this by providing children with a long-term, salaried, professional mentor, who we call a “Friend,” from kindergarten through high school graduation, 12+ years – no matter what. We are currently seeking a skilled grants leader to join our National grants team as a Director of Chapter Grants.
Our Director of Chapter Grants will be a passionate advocate for children facing the most obstacles and will be effective at communicating the urgency of our mission and the success of our outcomes. As part of our 5-year, $50 million National Expansion Campaign, you will enthusiastically support the National team’s efforts to secure multi-million-dollar funding annually through foundation, corporate and public grants.
This position will play a central role in the efficiency and effectiveness of Friends of the Children – National’s contracted grant writing and management services. Provided by a team of exceptionally talented grants professionals, Friends – National’s grants team has become an invaluable resource to the Friends of the Children network. Through close partnership with sites across the US – from Tacoma to Tampa Bay – our goal is to support local teams to build and maintain robust revenue-generating grant programs that are centered on best practices and responsive to each individual site’s needs. The Director of Chapter Grants will be equally skilled at providing strategic visioning and tactical support for our innovative and skilled grants team.
Basic Function/Position Overview:
The Director of Chapter Grants provides critical leadership within the grants department to raise annual Friends of the Children chapter budget revenue and provides strategic consultation to executive leaders across the network. This entrepreneurial leader will oversee a highly successful and fast-growing department that is continuing to grow alongside our expanding network of locations. Major responsibilities include developing and executing short- and long-term strategic goals in support of grants program growth; supporting network leaders to advance local strategic goals and sustainable development strategies; supervising and supporting members of the grants team; prospecting and grant writing; and positioning the national office and chapter-level leaders to fulfill their revenue goals. This position is responsible for applying a high level of technical and creative writing skill to proposals to foundations, family foundations, individuals, corporations, and public agencies for the purpose of soliciting funds. This role also requires the ability to professionally manage and build relationships with internal and external stakeholders. The Director of Grants works as a part of a dynamic Development and Marketing Team and must feel a strong connection to and promote the organization’s mission, vision, values and principles, and uphold the professionalism of the organization at all times. This position reports to the Chief Expansion Officer.
Essential Functions/Core Job Accountabilities
Leadership
- Develop and implement strategic plans to drive chapter grant related activities for the Office of Grants and Resource Development.
- Build team capacity to address evolving needs as the department grows.
- Strategize with chapter leadership to identify local and regional opportunities that support continuous growth, sustainability, and progress towards local strategic goals.
- Collaborate with National Executive Team and other national leadership to develop and present opportunities for Friends of the Children to advance network priorities.
- Ensure the representation of the organization’s commitment to equity and asset-framing in all written proposals, communications, and processes.
- Develop systems and partnerships to create and sustain a pipeline of diverse and talented grant writers.
- Strategically build a network-wide peer learning community to support grants activities across the network.
Grants Management
- Supervise and promote continuous skill building of grants team members.
- Oversee and participate in interview process to identify new writers.
- Oversee and support grants team onboarding.
- Support Grants Coordinator to strategically keep current grants management tools and supporting documents for the network to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of the grant writing, monitoring, and reporting processes.
- Support grant writers in proposal development as a thought partner on strategy, budgeting and reviewing/editing/providing feedback.
- Identifies new prospects, develops grant content and budgets, and ensures the accuracy of the annual grants calendars for chapters and expansion sites.
- Oversees maintenance of clear and accurate written and electronic records of grant proposals and reports, including grant activity tracking in the appropriate database(s) and shared drives.
- Responds to grant data requests and inquiries from internal and external audiences, including preparation and generation of reports.
- Keeps the relevant staff informed about upcoming deadlines and deliverables, thereby ensuring smooth completion of work responsibilities.
- Performs relevant research to identify available grant opportunities and evaluate the results.
Cross-Functional Partnerships and Stakeholder Relations
- Participates as member of Development and Marketing Team that is responsible for meeting annual revenue goals.
- Collaborates with Program and Finance departments to develop narrative content and budgets for proposals falling within assigned program focus areas.
- Collaborates with the Shared Services Teams to inform operational components.
- Works with chapter leadership to advise, support, challenge and deliver their vision for sustainable service delivery in their market.
- Supports the implementation of concrete tools to ensure the success of chapters, ensuring teams and resources are focused and aligned.
- Provides technical assistance to chapter leaders to ensure that priority strategies are intentional and outcome-led.
- Gathers feedback from chapters and brings back shared learnings to national around chapter support.
- Participates in training/onboarding and ongoing support for new chapter-level executive and development staff.
- Provides peer coaching and ongoing technical assistance to chapter grant writers (both on-staff and contracted).
Miscellaneous
- Monitors monthly time tracking and invoicing of chapters.
- Maintain confidential information in a sensitive and appropriate manner.
- Special projects as assigned in support of organizational objectives.

- Demonstrated success in obtaining grant driven funding from foundations and corporations.
- Ability to analyze and synthesize information for writing grant proposals, letters, articles, etc.
- Ability to incorporate diversity inclusion and/or equity into proposals and processes.
- Exceptional ability to edit written materials accurately and consistently, including own work.
- Exceptional analytical as well as intuitive abilities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills resulting in compelling messaging, as well as strong interpersonal and teamwork skills.
- Proven ability to track, prioritize, and drive multiple concurrent projects to success. This position utilizes data to communicate needs and to support high-quality business decision-making.
- Demonstrated ability to manage projects to maximize deliverables and meet deadlines, including developing work plans, managing contractors, developing, and tracking budgets.

Education and Experience Required:
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- A minimum of seven years of experience including non-profit grants management and writing with demonstrated success, collaboration with operations, program management and finance to support the development of content and budgets.
- Two or more years of experience leading teams and managing/supervising employees.
- Demonstrated experience with a grants management database and Excel.
- Demonstrated experience creating and managing project budgets.
