Full-Time Digital Engagement Manager

Organization Summary: The Animal Welfare Institute (AWI) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1951 whose mission is to alleviate the suffering of animals caused by people. Approximately 30 staff and consultants work from AWI headquarters in the Eastern Market district of Washington, DC, as well as in other locations around North America. More than 90 percent of AWI’s budget supports our programs to protect terrestrial and marine wildlife, farm animals, animals in research, and companion animals via strategically crafted campaigns, political advocacy, educational programs, litigation, and engagement with industry, policymakers, scientists, other NGOs, and the public.

 

Position Summary: The Digital Engagement Manager manages AWI’s digital footprint through social media, website content, and public calls to action (known internally as “eAlerts”) and seeks out strategies to further engage individuals committed to improving animal welfare, educate and inform the public about AWI’s important issues, and present AWI in a positive light.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee eAlert development: strategize with program teams to develop and schedule AWI’s eAlerts; Research innovative ways to further engage constituents on important issues affecting animals; Stay up to date with digital advocacy strategies and marketing best practices (compliance rules, spam reduction, content optimization etc.)
  • Manage eAlert distribution: Distribute eAlerts to segmented lists using AWI’s online advocacy platform (The Soft Edge); Monitor, improve upon, and report on open rates, click through rate, spam rates, etc.; Respond to emails, troubleshoot, and assist constituents when issues arise with taking action
  • Assure that AWI’s constituent database is up-to-date through regular list scrubbing
  • Grow AWI’s consistent subscriber database by executing growth campaigns, including through platforms such as Care2; Build, engage, and maintain a base of supporters that regularly take action for animals
  • Manage and grow AWI’s social media accounts, including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram; Work with staff to create post ideas, develop those ideas to meet the limitations and focus of the specific account, and work directly with leadership team for final approval; Respond to incoming inquiries from social media accounts
  • Measure and report on relevant key performance indicators (KPIs) across all digital campaigns; Identify trends/insights and optimize performance based on insights
  • Oversee and improve upon the search engine optimization of awionline.org; Measure awionline.org traffic and develop solutions for SEO optimization and traffic tracking through Google Analytics; Regularly audit and update website for SEO, broken links, etc.; Add, edit, and update basic web pages as needed
  • Manage AWI’s Google Ads grant and account
  • Recruit and supervise Communications Interns as necessary
  • Coordinate and oversee development of communications materials and campaigns such as Giving Tuesday, CFC, etc.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Advertising, Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or a related discipline.

Skills and Experience:

  • Digital advocacy, email marketing, or related experience required
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
  • Self-motivated to complete tasks with little supervision, but also able to work well as a team.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills and ability to prioritize projects and tasks.
  • Demonstrated interest in animal welfare.
  • Flexibility to work concurrently on multiple projects and take direction from multiple people.
  • Quick and enthusiastic learner.
  • Ability to multitask and manage short and long-term deadlines.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Knowledge of US legislative and rulemaking process preferred.
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite and basic HTML a plus.

Job Location

The position may be located either on-site at AWI’s headquarters in Washington, DC or in a remote location elsewhere in the United States.

 

Hourly Rage and Benefits

Hourly rate is commensurate with experience and abilities, as well as the employee’s work location and its respective cost of living. We offer an excellent benefits package, including employer-paid medical, prescription, and dental insurance, employee-paid vision insurance, 401(k) with employer match, and paid time off policy. For employees located in Washington, DC, on-site parking and an IRS commuter benefit program is provided.
