The Opportunity

The Development Director will be a strategic leader, collaborative team member, seasoned fundraiser, and skilled relationship builder. They will work with the Executive Director, Deputy Director, and Membership Director to drive all fundraising strategies that align with our coalition partner’s plans and meet their unique, individual needs.

Under the guidance and direction of our executive team (Executive and Deputy Directors), and in collaboration with the Development Team (Development Associate and Membership Director), they will work to strengthen and deepen membership giving, identify prospective donors and supporters, and encourage increased giving. In partnership with the Membership Director and Development Associate, the Development Director will spend significant time interacting with donors and will build and manage an active portfolio of 50 relationships in addition to staffing senior team members.

The Development Director will have a deep love for, personal and professional involvement in, and knowledge of the movements, communities, concerns, needs, challenges, and policy issues facing Georgia. With a commitment to intersectionality and racial and economic justice, they will have demonstrated experience in advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout their career.

The Development Director’s responsibilities will include but are not limited to the following:

Fundraising Strategy & Leadership
  • Develop strategic fundraising plans with realistic objectives, strategies, and metrics that charts program impact on long-term and short-term goals.
  • Lead and manage the growth of solicitation goals, cultivation strategies, and stewardship plans and all other aspects of donor engagement in collaboration with the Development Team members so that donors are respected, retained, and guided to increase their giving.
  • Possess a deep understanding of moves management, prospecting, and building robust donor pipelines.
  • Build and implement an active portfolio of 50 individual, institutional, and/or corporate donors to cultivate, solicit, and steward.
  • Support, prepare, and staff the Executive Director in cultivating, stewarding, and engaging the donors in their portfolio.
Relationship Building & Communication
  • Represent Georgia Alliance by speaking at public forums, events, trainings, and also by speaking at or writing for media-related needs and projects. Supports Georgia Alliance’s communications work.
  • Stay informed on the programmatic priorities of partner organizations, as well as nationwide and state specific issues impacting progressive movement work.
  • Craft compelling narratives that resonate with donors and funders.
  • Proven experience in developing and maintaining donor communications.
  • Enjoys building rapport with people across all manners of backgrounds, interests, and experiences.
Development Operations 
  • Effectively manage, navigate, and use the donor database and other platforms essential to fundraising work.
  • In collaboration with the Deputy Director, assist in researching prospective funders, drafting proposals and LOIs, managing reporting deadlines, and complying with funder requests for documentation or other applicable information.
  • Manage the donor database to establish processes for database hygiene, data integrity, and data management in collaboration with the Development Team.
  • Provide regular reports to the executive team on fundraising goals, progress, and donor trends.
Team Management
  • Strong people management skills and experience with the aptitude to resolve conflicts and overcome challenges positively and collaboratively.
  • Contribute to the creation of a diverse, equitable and inclusive work culture that encourages and celebrates differences including race, ethnicity, age, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, religion, disability, and socio-economic circumstance.
  • Ability to inspire a team to reach ambitious fundraising goals while maintaining their work/life balance.
Candidate Profile

We recognize that there is a spectrum of lived and professional experience that will set candidates up for success in this role. While no one candidate will have every experience outlined in the position description, ideal candidates will display the following professional and personal qualities, skills, and characteristics:

  • 5+ years of experience of partnering with a Development Team to develop an annual fundraising strategy that focuses on major giving, corporate giving, and grants with a focus on five- and six-figure gifts.
  • 3+ years of experience in soliciting, closing, and stewarding gifts with a diverse donor pool ideal.
  • Excellent at budget management, program design, project management, and coordination skills.
  • Explicit understanding of equity issues, including racial and other forms of oppression.
  • Ability to create inclusive spaces and avoid perpetuating harm in the fundraising process.
  • Appreciation for diverse perspectives and an understanding of the cultural context, especially in Georgia.
  • Capable manager and supervisor.
  • High-level of discretion and knowledge or practice of embedding anti-racism at an organizational level and in fundraising.
  • Ability to establish, cultivate, steward professional relationships with donors, institutional funders, and other stakeholders to build partnerships grounded in trust and informed by the values of and vision for the Georgia Alliance.
  • Ability to be an effective leader and community member that partners with the team and communities of diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to effectively engage with and navigate challenging conversations and ask the hard questions when required.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • A strong commitment to progressive values and connection to Georgia communities and organizations.
  • Lived and/or work experience relevant in movement spaces that value and center the leadership of the communities most impacted by racial, social, and economic injustices.
  • Strong organizational, time management, critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Familiarity with Slack, EveryAction, DonorSearch, and/or similar office tools to work more efficiently.
Compensation & Benefits

The Development Director role is a full-time position and is flexible to allow work from our Atlanta office and/or remotely. Compensation ranges from $115k-$130k per year; the final salary is based on experience and will be negotiated during the interview process. In addition, as a valued team member, you will receive full health, vision, and dental benefits.
