Full-Time Detention Restorative Justice Coordinator

Job Description

The Department of Community Justice Detention & Residential Services Team is seeking an individual to strengthen and improve our detention facility by implementing restorative practices.  The goal is to create opportunities for youth to process emotions and foster compassionate accountability as well as build community and take responsibility for behaviors and choices.

In this Program Specialist role, you will manage and oversee the restorative justice process within the detention facility, including the Assessment & Evaluation (A&E) residential program.  Restorative justice refers to a philosophy that seeks to understand and repair the harm that was done in a given situation, with a particular focus on restoring the harmed individual(s) and repairing damaged relationships rather than punishment.

Primary responsibilities include: 

  • Act as a subject matter expert (SME) on restorative philosophy and practices.
  • Coordinate the development and implementation of restorative practices within detention and A&E, including staff training.
  • Seek to improve policy and procedures by more thoroughly aligning them with restorative justice philosophy and practices.
  • With support of management, develop and oversee a contract and work closely with the selected contractor to implement staff and manager training, coaching, and the development of a short-term and long-term implementation plan.
  • Develop program evaluation criteria and metrics.
  • Collect data to evaluate outcomes based on goals and objectives.
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state and local laws that govern juvenile detention and Behavioral Rehabilitation Services (BRS) residential programs.
  • Conduct analysis on best practices and trends in the use of restorative practices in detention and residential settings, and formulate recommendations.
  • Coordinate planning and implementation with the Restorative Justice Program Specialist Senior in JSD’s Court & Community Supervision Services. Share resources and training opportunities, as appropriate.

TO QUALIFY:

We will consider any combination of relevant work experience, volunteering, education, and transferable skills as qualifying unless an item or section is labeled required. Please be clear and specific about how your background is relevant.

Minimum Qualifications/Transferable Skills:

  • Education/Training: Equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree with major coursework in sociology, psychology, justice administration or a related field; AND
  • One (1) year of work experience doing program development, policy analysis, or program compliance/monitoring and evaluation experience.
  • Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs):
    • At least two (2) years of restorative justice experience, including experience facilitating restorative justice processes.

    • One (1) year of responsible experience working with at-risk youth (ages 12-18) in one of the following environments:

      • Detention or youth correctional facility

      • Youth residential setting

      • Setting that provides programming for at-risk youth, which includes a K-12 school setting

    • Intermediate skill in teaching or facilitating training in restorative justice philosophy, approaches and practices.

  • Must pass a thorough background investigation, which includes being fingerprinted on the first day of employment.
