Job description
DE&S have an exciting opportunity to join the Merlin Delivery Team as a Senior Inventory Manager (SIM).
In this role, you will join the team that has several very high profile programmes in progress as well as significant in-service support requirements. The SIM role involves a full portfolio of demand and inventory management tasks to support in-service requirements for an aging airframe as well as providing support to the aircraft Mk3/4 upgrade programme and the new crowsnest capability programme.
Additionally, the SIM is a key role in the transformation of the Supply Chain Management (SCM) team from a reactive procurement space to a proactive one. There are daily management challenges in terms of prioritising the team’s workload to meet urgent tasks and preparing the team for the new processes and activity.
In early 2021, there will be opportunities to improve inventory optimisation as the closure of a large warehouse means large quantities of stock are moving to storage at Logistics Commodities and Services Transformation (LCST) – Donnington and effective disposition planning is to be undertaken with a new, improved relationship with the Defence Equipment Sales Agency (DESA).
The role will require occasional travel to the DE&S Head Office, based at Abbeywood, Filton near Bristol.
Responsibilities
Strong communications skills are required as the role involves constant liaison with the prime contractor, front line customers and other delivery teams and previous management experience is essential with a team of seven to manage effectively to ensure maximum output.
The role is likely to include the following responsibilities –
• Engage with key stakeholders and agree required service levels within own area of responsibility.
• Develop Demand and Supply Plans to deliver the required levels of service and optimise inventory within their area of responsibility.
• Lead a team to deliver the required service levels, monitoring performance against plan, providing effective management and oversight, and taking corrective action as required.
• Lead a team on SCM-related projects, providing direction, guidance and effective corrective actions as appropriate.
• Ensure all SCM personnel within their area of responsibility understand the need for data accuracy and their accountability for delivering this.
• Contribute to Inventory Optimisation initiatives recognising the need to seek and deliver Continuous Improvement wherever possible.
• Make purchasing/repair/disposal decisions in accordance with their level of financial delegation.
• Monitor all aspects of SCM performance, identify opportunities for improvement and initiate corrective action where necessary.
• Lead, motivate and develop Supply Chain staff to build capability within the Function.
• Be accountable for all Material Accounting aspects of SCM within their area of responsibility.
• Be accountable for the application or development of SCM Policy and Processes.
What you will be assessed against
To be found successful you must demonstrate the following essential criteria:
• Education to a relevant post-graduate qualification level or equivalent experience appropriate for an Subject Matter Expert (SME) within a range of Supply Chain Management disciplines
• Strong leadership and people management skills
• Proven ability to deliver continuous improvement
• Stakeholder management skills at all levels, internal and external
It would benefit your application should be able to demonstrate the following desirable criteria:
• Experience of data analysis to diagnose, improve and drive supplier performance, compliance and demand planning
• Experience of managing high value/complex contracted supply chain partnerships
• A strong background in asset accounting and inventory optimisation activities
• Military, Defence or Industry logistics experience

The Integrated Logistics (iLog) Function is the integrating Function for Support within DE&S, responsible for the development, management and delivery of in-service support for our front-line command customers. The iLog Function consists of around 2,900 personnel, both civil servants and military, and with a wide range of disciplines ranging from operations management and supply chain management, technical through-life support and logistics delivery, to modelling and analysis.
