Job description
Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S) are looking for Software Safety Specialists to join the Internal Technical Support team, in the Engineering department.
The ITS Independent Safety Environmental Audit team is a significant and growing area of consultancy, providing the business with independent Safety and Environmental audit or advice services. The Programmable Elements Specialism is seeking to expand their expert team, to attract software and complex hardware specialists for project and programme safety activities across DE&S.

Responsibilities
You will act as an expert in independent programmable elements safety advice and audit and provide an increasing catalogue of services to Delivery Teams, assuring the delivery of safe and suitable equipment to the Front Line. Encompassing functionality through programmable elements, you will focus on assurance of process compliance against Software Safety Defence Standards (DEF STAN) and associated recognised good practice standards.
Your responsibilities will include, but not be limited to, the following:
• Improving contract/delivery times and increase consistency by identifying and spreading Safety and Environmental best practice across DE&S
• Scoping fixed price technical consultancy tasks to meet customer needs and be deliverable to cost, time and quality
• Helping clients identify and solve complex software and hardware safety challenges
• Working on complex products, systems and services
• Providing independent programmable elements audit capability against a catalogue of services to ensure best practice and best value to the customer
• Administering knowledge and experience of audit and review of programmable elements safety management plans, safety cases and programmable elements safety summary (PESS) report, or equivalent industry artefacts
• Acting as independent subject matter expert in software and complex hardware, to challenge delivery teams and industry partners on best practice, compliance, continuous improvement, risk analysis and mitigation techniques
• The ability to provide professional expert consultancy services to a range of senior stakeholders
What you will be assessed against
To be found successful you must demonstrate the following essential criteria:
• Programmable elements, software and/or complex hardware engineering experience
• Demonstrable ability to scope and deliver high quality outputs to time and cost against developed programmes of work
• An understanding and knowledge of developing clear, logical and convincing programmable elements safety arguments in support of safety assessments or cases
• Experience delivering technical consultancy services in a commercial environment
• Level 6 qualification in a relevant engineering or science discipline, or extensive relevant experience in software, programmable elements or systems safety (or other relevant subject)
It would benefit your application should you be able to demonstrate the following desirable criteria:
• Training related to programmable elements related safety standards (e.g. IEC 61508)
• Understanding of DEF STAN 00-055
• Understanding and experience of complex software and hardware within military domains
