Job description

A rare and exciting opportunity to become the environmental lead in the Ships Safety & Environmental Protection Team. This is a new high-profile post in the Engineering Headquarters at the centre of Ships Domain comprising of the Ship Acquisition and Ships Support Operating Centres. The post will lead a team of two L3 and one L2 environmental specialists in a newly formed Environmental Centre of Expertise (ECOE) with the objective of developing environmental management in the Operating Centres to a mature position and then enabling it to be sustained at full assurance.

Responsibilities

This will require the incumbent to lead and manage an environmental change programme, to develop options for, and delivery of, a more effective and efficient Ships Environmental Management System (EMS). Ultimately, this will include ensuring effective environmental Governance and Assurance processes, undertaking engagement with senior staff on a regular basis. In addition, the ECOE will produce environmental outputs, such as POEMS (Project Oriented Environmental Management System) Environmental Impact Screening and Scoping studies, and provide Subject Matter Expert advice to a wide and diverse range of Delivery Teams.

This is a challenging assignment that requires someone with a well-rounded set of DE&S behaviours, a confident self-starter, someone with the drive and determination to deliver. This person will need strong environmental knowledge and management skills, ideally with the addition of change programme experience.

What you will be assessed against

To be found successful you must demonstrate the following essential criteria:

• A minimum Level 6 qualification in a relevant engineering or science discipline OR suitable relevant experience
• Significant environmental experience within the maritime industry (or other highly-regulated industry)
• Chartered or Incorporated Engineer or Science affiliation and/or Member of a relevant Professional Safety, Environmental or Engineering Institute (or suitable, relevant experience)

It would benefit your application should you be able to demonstrate the following desirable criteria:

• A good working knowledge of the defence environmental regulatory framework and policy set (e.g. ASEMS and/or DSA02-DMR)
• Significant stakeholder engagement experience implementing change
• Experience in managing a team delivering environmental outputs
