Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S) and the Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA) are actively recruiting for Maritime Safety and Environmental engineers that are looking to really make a difference, as intelligent decision makers, integral to supporting our armed forces.
You could have the opportunity to be deployed across the varied Defence Maritime portfolio, which includes the Royal Navy Surface Ship or Submarine flotilla, or the Royal Fleet Auxiliary support ships. You will work to provide safety and environmental support to teams throughout the equipment and platform acquisition lifecycle, which may span requirement setting in the concept phase and overseeing the design of our new build ships and submarines, through to in-service support of our current platforms and their eventual disposal.
If deployed into Defence, Equipment and Support, you can expect to be assigned to a specific platform Class, for example, our Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft carriers, Type 45 Destroyers or Mine Countermeasure vessels, or to a portfolio of equipment or systems, for example our Marine Propulsion Team, Maritime Electronic Warfare programme or other Maritime Combat Systems team.
If you are deployed into the Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA), you can expect to be assigned to a specific Class of Submarines, for example our Vanguard Class ballistic missile submarines, or our Astute or Trafalgar class attack submarines, or to a portfolio of equipment or systems, for example our submarine Combat Systems team.
Your valuable knowledge will be used in each application to support safety and environmental decision making, working closely in a team of engineers, and with front line commands to help manage risks to our service men and women and to the environment.
Please note that roles available with the SDA may require that candidates are Sole UK nationals due to the nature of the projects involved.
Responsibilities
As our Maritime Safety and Environmental Engineer you will work to establish, implement and maintain an appropriate Safety and / or Environmental Management System (SEMS) through the application of DE&S and SDA policy.
You will be responsible for setting up, running and maintaining SEMS at Project level, as well as overseeing and mitigating Systems Safety / Environmental risks.
You will provide advice and support with Systems Safety / SEMS to colleagues, ensuring that appropriate standard and environmental arrangements are correctly applied and delivered in contracts, as well as managing contractors who perform safety management activities on behalf of DE&S / SDA.
You may be required to act as a specialist member or secretariat of Safety and Environmental Panels and Committees.
What you will be assessed against
To be found successful you must demonstrate the following essential criteria:
• A minimum of Level 4 NQF in a relevant engineering or science discipline.
• Knowledge and experience in the implementation of a Safety Management System, noting that this is a systems safety role and not OHSE.
• Experience of working in, or working knowledge of Maritime safety regulations and policy, in either a civil or Defence application.
• Experience of constructing safety arguments or Safety Cases in a relevant field, which may include Maritime or other industry.
It would benefit your application should you be able to demonstrate the following desirable criteria:
• Experience in any of the following broad Safety skills would be advantageous: Hazard Log Management, Hazard Identification and Analysis using recognised techniques, Risk Assessment and ALARP justifications, Safety management across the lifecycle from Concept to Disposal, Safety Audit, Safety Integrity Level (SIL) Derivation and Assessment or Software Safety Assessment, use of Safety Tools e.g. Goal Structuring Notation (GSN)
• Working knowledge of Defence Maritime safety policy and regulation, for example, the Defence Safety Authority regulations, specifically DSA02-DMR, the Naval Ships Code (ANEP-77), and Classification Society Rules and Regulations for Ship Design.
• Working knowledge of defence safety standards, for example Def-Stan 00-056.
• Knowledge and experience of implementation of Maritime Environmental Management Systems.
• Professional recognition achieved through appropriate membership of an engineering, science or safety institution.
