Job description
Examples of current requirements include:
– Providing Electrical SQEP input to support maintaining the Design Intent of Marine Systems, with the current focus on the T23 Class Frigate and future scope to include Mine Counter Measures ships. Key activities include: a. analysing the impact of design changes on the electrical elements of the Marine System, ensuring compliance with relevant standards, and the development of design solutions for AC and DC based Power Generation and Distribution systems; b. periodic review of electrical systems capacity to support the management of power margins; c. supporting the creation of the first Systems Level Safety and Environmental Cases for T23 Marine Systems.
– Providing support and management to the Change Impact Assessment Process, an essential element of the Design Management activities that fall under the Common Support Model, to support the analysis of impacts of proposed design changes. Acting as Superuser/Manager for all proposed Marine design changes, analysing proposed changes to design to ensure coherence and compliance with current and future strategy.
– Supporting internal communications ancillaries, cables and connectors, and miscellaneous electrical fittings, whilst providing technical engineering support across Ships/Submarines, and providing support, identifying Fit Form and Function replacements, and to Operations Managers, for contract scope/contract management on technical aspects and technical docs updates.
– Assignment within the Submarine Production Team, which forms part of the Acquisition pillar of SDA, supporting Build engineering and safety aspects, and delivery into service of the ASTUTE Class Submarine Platform Electrical systems, which include AC and DC Power Generation and Distribution, Power Conversion equipment, Energy Storage systems and associated complex C&I systems.

Responsibilities
The responsibilities of these posts include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Providing assurance that the design conforms to the relevant engineering and Build standards, and contractual requirements
• Providing input to support maintaining the Design Intent of Marine Systems, which could include a selection of AC and DC Power Generation and Distribution, Power Conversion equipment, Energy Storage systems and associated complex Control & Instrumentation systems, Internal comms Ancillaries (headsets, handsets, microphones and loudspeakers), cables and connectors and miscellaneous electrical fittings
• Co-ordination and management of design changes in the Build environment and analysis of the impact of planned design changes on the electrical elements of Marine Systems, aiding the development of system design solutions and supporting the creation of the first Systems Level Safety and Environmental Cases for various ships and submarine classes
• Ensuring that there is a robust upgrade plan that stakeholders can contribute to, to ensure that security and safety is maintained and legislation is implemented
• Assisting with the management and analysis of Platform Electrical systems and equipment undergoing build and commissioning prior to operational handover into service, including participation in the acceptance of system performance through trials
• Providing engineering input to the assessment and management of technical Risks associated with Platform Electrical systems
• Supporting the technical acquisition process, by reviewing industry submissions and supporting production of technical contractual documentation
• Working to resolve operational technical defects through advising the ship’s crew of testing procedure
• Working with the logistics function and industry to identify spare units or workarounds, depending on operational priority and safety assessment
• SDA Post only – Assisting in ensuring compliance with relevant Authorisation Conditions that support the Nuclear Safety Case are effectively delivered through internal processes and procedures and commercial arrangements. Awareness or experience of software development in safety related applications would be desirable.
What you will be assessed against
To be found successful you must demonstrate the following essential criteria:
• A minimum of a Level 4 (e.g. HNC) qualification in Electrical Engineering (or other suitable discipline) OR suitable relevant experience
• Experience in Electrical systems design, testing and/or acceptance
• Experience working with suppliers, contractors, subject matter experts and/or shareholders
It would benefit your application should you be able to demonstrate the following desirable criteria:
• Level 6 (e.g. BEng) qualification in Electrical Engineering
• Experience of systems safety decision making
• Experience of the application of Electrical Engineering within Maritime environment (commercial or military)
• Understanding of technical risk analysis and risk based decision making
• Demonstrable experience providing technical advice and delivery of successful engineering outcomes
