A unique and interesting role within the Air Environment of DE&S’ Engineering Function has arisen for a Safety Expert to join the team the Wildcat Safety team. The Engineering Function is responsible for ensuring that the equipment (or service) supplied to the front-line customer is safe to operate, meets the user requirement and is supportable through life. Within Engineering, the Acquisition Safety and Environmental Protection (ASEP) discipline is responsible for providing expert advice and guidance in supporting the delivery of Acquisition Safety / Acquisition Environment and/or Sustainable Procurement strategy, policy and solutions relevant to their specialist area. This will include interaction with both internal and external parties, across a range of projects and advising customers on engineering design and development. It involves pro-active through life management of project safety risk management delivery in support of safe and suitable equipment, systems, and services to Front Line Commands.

Responsibilities

As Safety Lead within the Air domain, you will be responsible for developing, managing and maintaining an effective Safety Management System, ensuring that the Safety Management Plan complies with Military Aviation Authority (MAA) regulation and DE&S policy, following best practice.
Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• Leading the Safety Engineering team; building and maintaining good working relationships with safety stakeholders, platform operators and our industry partners;
• Leading Safety activity associated with Capability projects being integrated onto the platform;
• Reviewing safety artefacts from the platform Design Organisation and DE&S Commodity Delivery Team’s and making safety recommendations to the TAA (Type Airworthiness Authority) to support Release to Service Recommendations;
• Managing the safety interface with the platform Design Organisation to ensure that the safety requirements detailed in the Statement of Requirement for the In-Service Support Contract are delivered to an appropriate standard to support the Type Airworthiness Safety Assessment;
• Maintaining the Type Airworthiness Safety Assessments and managing safety governance processes and meetings (e.g.: Air Equipment Safety reviews and the Project Safety & Environmental Panel)
• Provide safety SME advice to key internal safety and environmental meetings e.g. Integrity Working Groups, Local Technical Committee, Configuration Control Board, Hazard Working Group, Hazard Review Meeting, among others.
• Oversee, direct and review the activities of an Independent Safety Auditor and provide tasking to and liaise with the Independent Technical Evaluator
• Working with DE&S Ships (Aviation Support Group) to deliver Ship Air Release Recommendations
• Lead UK Safety discussions with Partner Nations

What you will be assessed against

To be successful with your application you must demonstrate that you meet the following essential criteria:

• Chartered Engineer or has the ability to achieve this within 12 months
• Relevant Level 6 (or higher) qualification in a relevant Engineering or Science discipline, or equivalent relevant experience
• Demonstrable management experience in an engineering safety role within the aviation sector
• Proven experience and knowledge of air safety and air worthiness
• Hold an appropriate Letter of Airworthiness Authority (LoAA) or Safety Letter of Delegation

It would benefit your application if you be able to demonstrate the following desirable criteria:

• Experience in the use of ASEMS and System Safety Management Tools & Processes
• Experience of working within mandatory Regulation and advising on compliance
• Experience of working on multiple acquisition and change projects simultaneously

In addition to the responsibilities above, the following technical competencies and behaviours will be assessed at interview:
