Job description
Defence Munitions receive store, maintain & issue a wide range of munitions that are used by the UK armed forces to train, protect and serve anywhere in the world. Defence Munitions is part of the Weapons Operating Centre which forms part of the Defence Equipment & Support Organisation within the UK Ministry of Defence. Defence Munitions Beith provides a range of Complex Weapon processing, storage and engineering activities.
You will provide routine processing support to receiving, storing, maintaining and issuing of the range of Complex Weapons as mandated by the MoD to equip the Armed Services.
The role requires a multi-skilled operator who will normally work under supervision. You must have a level of competence in non-technical skills required to support general tasks undertaken on complex weapon processing, including the limited use of IT systems.
Responsibilities
Supporting a multi-skilled team, you will assist in meeting production targets with due regard to safety, time, cost and quality. You will conduct inspections, unpacking, repacking and marking activities, control of consumables, handling (using MHE) and general support as required to the Complex Weapons processed on site.
You will display a proactive approach to risk management and strict adherence to Safe Systems of Work. You will also contribute to team decisions and support other colleagues. Occasionally, the role may have mentoring responsibilities for new or less experienced employees, contributing to team motivation and improvement of performance.
Key activities may include:
* Ensuring Complex Weapon explosive items are handled in a safe and efficient manner to comply with Safe Systems of Work, including authorised procedures, risk assessments, manual handling, COSHH and JSP 482 MoD explosives regulations.
* Maintain a high standard of security, cleanliness and housekeeping within the explosives processing facilities to prevent accidents or damage to munitions.
* Carry out and record on check sheets that Mechanical Handling Equipment pre and post use checks have been made to ensure equipment is serviceable and safe to operate.
* Contributing to explosive safety of Complex Weapons and conducting munitions processing tasks as per the processing/production schedule.
Maintenance & remarking of weapon containers in accordance with approved specs.
The role requires adopting a multi-skilled philosophy and approach in supporting wider depot operations in accordance with local and departmental policy and procedures. Typically, this may include activities such as general logistic and storage duties including the operation of several types of MHE and hand tools in supporting engineering tasks.
The successful applicant will be required to become conversant in the non-technical aspects of through life management activities for Complex Weapons and General Engineering support that will build upon and strengthen levels of experience, knowledge and functionality.
You will have good verbal and written communication skills, as you will be interacting with a wide range of internal and external customers and stakeholders, both military and civilian, and including contractors.
You may be asked to carry out additional ad-hoc tasks, as requested by the line management but also taking the initiative to progress work within the limits of authority.

• You will have the basic IT skills that include the use of MS Outlook, Word and Excel.

• Having a basic engineering or munitions knowledge would be advantageous but is not a pre-requisite as training will be provided.
