Job description

For centuries our Armed Forces have managed an in-house postal service, delivering mail across our military history including both World Wars. The British Forces Post Office is dedicated to providing postal and courier services to the UK Armed Forces and is a renowned brand across Defence. Our 250 dedicated, hard-working civilian and military staff work collaboratively to deliver both personal and official mail to over 650 locations across the globe; keeping our armed forces connected through free letter and parcel services that play a vital role in sustaining the morale of our Armed Forces.

Responsibilities

British Forces Post Office (BFPO) provides safe, correct and efficient receipt, sortation and dispatch of all mail (Classified, Official and Private) in support of the Armed Forces, serving departments such as Defence Courier Service (DCS), Defence Mail Centre (DMC), Foreign & Commonwealth Office Outward Bag Room (FCO OBR). The role manages a team or section ensuring the appropriate staffing levels to deliver expected standard of services to agreed budget and financial targets. Personnel are required to lift mail items up to 11kg unaided and up to 30kg assisted.

Key responsibilities associated with these demands include:

• Oversee, update and maintain processes and procedures in accordance with internal and external stakeholders such as BFPO,DCS, Royal Mail Group etc.
• Ensure technical equipment and operating systems (including handhelds, mobile printers, date stamps and consumables) are maintained to expected standards and seek appropriate maintenance support where necessary.
• Supervise and complete activities such as receipt, dispatch, track/trace or redirection of all mail types including on occasion secure processing, recording, investigating, filing and record keeping of DCS items.
• In capacity as Primary Delivery Manager and Functional Development Officer, you will Supervise and manage staff on a daily basis completing relevant system documentation on absence, leave and performance and ensure mandatory training of staff is complete to maintain a safe and effective environment.
• Ensure the required levels of security and health and safety are met, strictly adhering to current and relevant regulations and policies at all times.

As a Postal and Mail Supervisor, you will work a standard week of 07:30 – 16:00hrs (Monday – Friday).

To be successful in the role, it is likely you will have:

• Educated to A Level or equivalent. Alternatively, knowledge acquired through role specific training and experience of over two years.
• Managerial and financial management experience.
• Good working knowledge of mail operating systems used by BFPO, Royal Mail Group or Post Office Counters
• Knowledge of security regulations that pertain to handling and movement of Protectively Marked Material. Knowledge or experience of mail and cargo aviation security principles within the Department for Transport (DfT)/Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).
• General knowledge of IT Systems and on-line commercial applications.

It is essential that applicants have and maintain a full UK driving license, with a maximum of 6 penalty points (endorsements).

Restaurant and gym facilities (at Parsons Barracks) within 5 minutes’ drive from the DMC can be used by DMC staff. Additionally, free car parking is available on site for all employees.
