The role of the Guns and Maintenance Manager is to lead a small team undertaking planned and reactive maintenance, functional testing, diagnostics, repair and modifications to a wide range of in service weapons including Naval Guns on Maritime Platforms.

As the successful candidate you will Lead the Weapons Engineering Section in carrying out planned maintenance, functional testing, diagnostics, repair, and modification of weapons systems used in the Maritime environment. Delivered through implementation of through life management planning.
You will deliver high quality diagnostic work and carry out any remedial work involving the tracing of faults or malfunctions of equipment, ensuring only the correct, authorised and serviceable equipment is used in support of in-service Weapons and Naval Guns.
You will be required to identify engineering risks and issues which impact on the technical solutions ability to satisfy the customer needs and escalate where necessary.
Provide technical advice to stakeholders and contractors to ensure equipment and service meets required standards to the customer, and to ensure facilities are safe, secure and correctly prepared, set up and compliant with current regulations.
Responsibilities
Your main responsibilities are as follows:
• To promote and apply the principles laid down in the MOD (Ministry Of Defence) Single Skills Framework, the MOD Pay and Grading Manual and reflected in the New DM (Defence Munitions) Values to create a flexible motivated and committed team.
• To develop and maintain a mutually supportive team, within and across Business Stream/Functional boundaries, capable of delivery with emphasis on empowerment, communication, collaboration, co-operation and recognition.
• To take ownership of, and responsibility for, their team’s contribution to service delivery interpreting priorities and redirecting efforts when priorities change.
• To manage the team’s performance ensuring best value for Defence Munitions (DM).
• To make decisions which benefit Defence Munitions (DM) and take full account of cross-Business Stream and Functional boundaries and issues.
• To adhere to standard processes when delivering services and product.
• To promote pro-activity and contribute to the continuous improvement of processes in conjunction with the Operations process owners.
• To maintain a safe working environment, ensuring that all statutory and mandatory MOD requirements in respect of Explosives Safety, General Safety, Health, Environment (SHE); Quality and Fire are adhered too.
• Lead a team ensuring individually and collectively they achieve their full potential. Ensure that staff management issues are dealt with promptly, HRMS is annotated accordingly, performance appraisal reports are completed in time and staff training and equal opportunity needs are met.
• You will manage recruitment and induction of new staff into your area of responsibility, maintaining a capacity and resource plan to meet supply and demand needs as well as expected service delivery levels.
• Line management responsibility for 6 staff.
• Act within the prescribed limits stated in delegated authorities and must exercise appropriate regularity and propriety in all transactions.
• To cease section operations if there is any doubt over Health, Safety and Environment.
• To refuse any person/organisation working on the section if they fail to provide a relevant Certificate of Competency, Method Statement and Risk Assessment.
• Manage staff, monitoring performance, managing disciplinary matters as well as accounting for absence and leave. Daily activities include the allocation, control of workflow, production reporting and training.
Please note:
• An element of travel will be required in this role, which includes visiting other Defence Munitions (DM) sites across the south coast.
• You will be required to act as Duty Control Officer and assume the role of senior competent person within the depot during silent hours, requiring full understanding of depot emergency procedures.
• You will be required on occasion to take on additional duties as directed by your Primary Delivery Manager (PDM) or Head of Establishment (HoE).
What you will be assessed against
To be found successful you must demonstrate the following essential criteria:
• Recognised Apprenticeship in relevant technical discipline and Level 3 NVQ/ONC OR equivalent within the specialisation.
It would benefit your application should be able to demonstrate the following desirable criteria:
• Experience of managing a team within a technical environment.
• Appropriate knowledge of the principles of Safety legislation and regulations and the requirements of Safety Management Systems (SMS) for: Explosives Safety and General Safety, Health, Environment and Fire.
• Good understanding of complex weapons, general munitions and/or naval guns and relevant policies and procedures.
