We are looking for an enthusiastic and capable individual to champion and embed environmental sustainability into the policy, advice, guidance, tools and training used by DE&S to procure and support equipment on behalf of the Armed Forces.
As our Environmental Protection Policy Manager you will support a significant DE&S change programme that aims to improve our environmental sustainability.
This role will provide opportunities to contribute to shaping future policy and environmental sustainability performance.
This role also involves providing ongoing maintenance of the Acquisition Safety and Environmental Management System (ASEMS) and/ the Project Orientated Environmental Management System (POEMS) content for relevance and currency, identifying where improvements can be made, and providing advice on its application to the wider organisation.
Responsibilities
One part of this role is about ensuring new policy is implemented in accordance with corporate direction, the other is about encouraging and facilitating input from the wide range of customers within DE&S to ensure corporate guidance is helpful to those across all domains (Land, Sea, Air and Weapons).
You will be required to help shape policies, plans, and processes to ensure environmental protection and social value issues are identified and can be factored into the decision-making processes. This will require you to be experienced implementing and developing environmental protection policy and applied environmental management activities under recognised frameworks such as ISO14001 and ASEMS.
You will also support a change process that is enabling DE&S to deliver or exceed the Greening Government Commitments (GGC) and Carbon Net Zero targets by applying a cross-disciplinary corporate values-based approach for identifying and responding to critical social, environmental and economic risks, opportunities and dependencies faced by DE&S and our stakeholders now and in the future.
You will require the ability to collaborate, innovate and resolve sustainability challenges to help DE&S transform and mature towards the ambition of being a truly sustainable business.
In your role as our Environmental Protection Policy Manager, you will be responsible for:
Developing an ongoing review programme of the POEMS, including managing Subject Matter Expert involvement.
Initiating, presenting and drafting new content to ensure POEMS aligns with current industry practice, MOD policy and regulation.
Ensuring that feedback and direction from DE&S environmental groups is applied and represented in POEMS where appropriate.
Supporting the development of the QSEP suite of environmental protection and sustainability courses to ensure they remain up to date and support the DE&S evolving Environmental Sustainability Strategy.
Managing the interface between POEMS and other DE&S/MOD guidance including wider ASEMS, Knowledge in Defence and the SEP web pages.
What you will be assessed against
To be found successful you must demonstrate the following essential criteria:
• A minimum of a Level 4 qualification in an environmental discipline (highly desirable: bachelors or postgraduate-level)
• Practical experience of developing and managing environmental management systems (ideally in accordance with ISO14001)
• An excellent level of stakeholder management and communication skills at a senior level
It would benefit your application should you be able to demonstrate the following desirable criteria:
• Recognised registration as an environmental professional (e.g. PIEMA, CEnv)
• Experience of writing policy, procedures or guidance in an environmental protection or sustainability context
• Practical experience of the implementation of environmental management systems for products, services or systems in accordance with the requirements of ASEMS, POEMS and Defence Standard 00-051
