The role of the Engineering Fitter is technical and the incumbent will be part of a team of technical staff focused on maintenance and repair, storage and/or modification and delivery of complex weapons and associated equipment, which may range from mechanical working, technical planning, Special To Type Equipment (STTE) and configuration management.

Defence Muntions (DM) is part of the Weapons Operating Centre (WOC) which forms part of the Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S) organisation within the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD). Defence Munitions Beith provides a range of Complex Weapon processing, storage and engineering support functions.
As a Mechanical Fitter the post holder will be part of a team within 1 of 2 distinct roles.
The first role is primarily responsible for delivery of production and engineering outputs for various MoD customers. You will work within a team of experienced craftsmen, performing a range of clearly defined and challenging processing operations which can include assembly and disassembly, preparation and testing of complex weapons as well as their associated support equipment.
The second role will primarily be responsible for tasks within Technical Planning. This role requires the post holder to engage with a range of stakeholders to produce documentation in support of the Monthly Plans for depot production areas, and the control, data capture and maintenance of processing history records. You will also provide support, advice, guidance and suggestions relating to their specific tasking and also provide technical support to production areas.
Responsibilities
The roles available also involve a range of production and engineering operations to deliver wider set plans that follow controlled processing documentation; ensuring production output targets and goals are achieved to the requisite high quality and safety standards.
You will also have the opportunity to provide advice on a range of technical solutions; ranging from the mundane to the highly complex in line with a ‘continuous improvement’ mindset and our organisational goals. This will be in line with the relevant statutory and mandatory MoD safety standards in order to manage the risk generated by operations in a ALARP fashion (As Low As Reasonably Practicable). Safety is important to us, and should also be to you.
As part of a multi-disciplinary team that works on a range of equipment; excellent communication skills are essential to achieve the diverse range of goals and outputs in a coherent, timely and effective fashion. In order to carry out this role, you will therefore be able to demonstrate a solid understanding of engineering practices and methodologies at interview.
A medical examination will also be required post interview if successful in the role.
What you will be assessed against
To be found successful you must demonstrate the following essential criteria:
• Recognised Apprenticeship in relevant Engineering discipline and Level 3 NVQ/SVQ OR equivalent within the specialisation.
It would benefit your application should be able to demonstrate the following desirable criteria:
• Experience in a Production background.
• Have a passion for safety legislation and safe working in order to buy-into and work within relevant Safety Management Systems.
• A degree of IT literacy and experience will be required.
• Having a broad understanding of risk and working within a lean improvement environment will be an advantage.
