British Forces Post Office (BFPO) sits within the Logistics Delivery Operating Centre, in DE&S. BFPO and the Main Sorting Office facility are located at RAF Northolt in Ruislip, West London and is a renowned brand across Defence. It has a long distinguished history of providing postal and courier services for the UK Armed Forces and their dependants around the world.
The Finance Team in BFPO plays a critical role in the integrity, consistency and accuracy of the BFPO delegated budget with regard to management of accounts, planning and budgeting, and in-year performance reporting. They are currently seeking a Cost Controller who will be the most senior finance representative within the organisation and as such, will be a critical hire to ensure financial robustness within a large multi-site organisation. Whilst this is a leadership role, it is also a hands on role which will require the individual to get involved in the day to day operations.
As a Cost Controller you will be responsible for managing a team of cost control finance staff to ensure all project costs are represented, controlled and maintained in the DE&S financial and performance systems. You will work with suppliers and stakeholders to integrate relevant cost and performance information and you will be responsible for ensuring performance and forecasting data is interpreted, challenged and communicated with key stakeholders to drive delivery.
You will be the focal point for financial advice and guidance to, senior stakeholders around the organisation and therefore must be flexible and have the ability to work on their own initiative and as an effective member of the Management Team. The job will entail working to tight deadlines and will require the post-holder to demonstrate drive and determination to complete tasks accurately and professionally.
In person, you will possess good interpersonal, communication and relationship building skills with experience of working collaboratively with teams, across functions and with all levels. You will be dedicated to personal and business improvement. These posts represent a real opportunity to be involved with the continual development of best practice within DE&S and SDA Project Controls / Finance environment.
You will need to provide evidence of:
– Experience of financial and funding forecasts in a delivery environment
– Experience of financial and performance reporting and audit support
– Experience of financial risk management and investment decisions
– Have proven strong communication skills, team working and stakeholder engagement skills in providing advice on complex decision making
Responsibilities
These roles would suit project cost management / finance professionals ideally with some experience in delivery projects through the stages of design, procurement and construction/production.
A background in the defence sector is not a prerequisite as we welcome applicants from a broad spectrum of industries and sectors from either a financial or Project Cost Control background.
Responsibilities include:
– Cost management in a project delivery environment
– Production /maintenance of accurate and timely accruals-based actuals and forecasts
– Production of financial performance reporting information in a baseline and delivery environment, investigating/explaining variances from budget
– Analysis and communication of complex cost information to all levels of the organisation.
– Performance Management / Earned Value Management (APM EVM)
– Engagement with Planning and Estimating sub-functions and the integration of financial risk and change control processes
– Team management, coaching and development
– Stakeholder identification and management
Due to security requirements these posts will require candidates to obtain security clearance (Security check).

BFPO Northolt recruitment and retention allowance of £1,750 pa as well as the Outer London Weighting of £1,500 pa. BFPO has free onsite parking, an onsite canteen and gymnasium.
Please be aware DE&S HQ is based in Bristol and as such occasional travel to Bristol will likely be necessary for business purposes.
