DE&S are offering the exciting opportunity to work with the most technically advanced combat systems on the Type 26 Warship. This is an exciting opportunity to be a key member of the Ship Acquisition Type 26 Global Combat Ship (T26 GCS) team. The T26 GCS is a 21st Century innovative warship that will replace the Type 23 frigate as the work horse of the fleet, undertaking the Royal Navy’s three core roles – warfighting, maritime security and international engagement, all on the world stage. The Type 26 project is currently the largest non-nuclear project in defence procurement so represents a vital investment in the future capability of the Royal Navy.
The Type 26 combat system encompasses a wide array of systems which all interact to provide the ship with world class capability. These systems range from sensors such as navigation and surveillance radars, sonar, various communications systems, metrological, military GPS, Command and Control, as well as both defensive and offensive gunnery and missile systems.
These two roles advertised are within the Type 26 Joint Acceptance and Assurance Team and are responsible for providing build assurance throughout the different stages of the build programme, ensuring combat and weapons systems equipment are installed in accordance with agreed standards and when trialled perform to pre-defined criteria.
Typical duties may include:
• Using specialist knowledge to review and mature equipment test, commissioning and trial schedules
• Liaising with the design/engineering community on any engineering concerns or queries identified during inspection or assurance activity
• Support to readiness reviews to ensure key activities such as major equipment installation or equipment first operation are enabled
• Liaising with key stakeholders (other MOD departments, Royal Navy etc) on safety certification issues
• Conducing installation inspections and harbour trials on combat and weapon system equipment
• Conducting build surveillance in accordance with the relevant surveillance plan on in-process work
• Assessing build aspects to ensure the key equipment is installed in accordance with the relevant standards
• Engaging with industry stakeholders to identify and resolve emergent issues (e.g quality, equipment performance etc)
• Tracking and managing technical issues and Non-conformance to a successful conclusion
• Conducting compartment inspections to verify the combat compartments have been built to pre-agreed standards and drawings
Responsibilities
As part of this role you will be responsible for engaging with the prime contractor within the build yard ensuring contractual standards are met. Responsibilities will also include:
• Managing the delivery against pre-defined engineering technical requirements
• Contribute to execution of relevant Engineering Management Plans
• Interpreting and applying appropriate Defence and international standards
• Developing low complexity requirements, test plans and acceptance criteria
• Providing test and evaluation recommendations to technical decision makers
• Explaining the derivation of the requirements and evaluation criteria in your area of work
• Identifying appropriate sources of evidence to inform technical decision making
• Making technical judgement calls when appropriate, identifying any personal limitations and appropriately deferring, while maintaining a decision log / record
• Seeking input from a range of sources before making technical decisions
• Adhering to the Code of Conduct of the relevant Professional
Please be advised that this role will occasionally be required to climb vertical ladders, work at height and in confined spaces, although suitable training will be provided.
Please also note that due to security classification aspect of this project, this role is open to Sole UK Nationals only.
What you will be assessed against
To be found successful you must demonstrate the following essential criteria:
• Relevant Level 4 qualification in an Engineering discipline or equivalent experience
• Combat Systems or Weapon Systems experience
• Experience of providing technical advice and delivery of successful engineering outcomes
It would benefit your application should be able to demonstrate the following desirable criteria:
• Ship building experience
• Experience in an Intelligent Customer role supporting the delivery of complex projects
