Deputy Regional Director: Southern and East AfricaThe National Democratic Institute for International Affairs (NDI) seeks a Deputy Regional Director for its Southern & East Africa (SEA) Team. This Washington, D.C.-based position will assist the Regional Director who is based in the field. In collaboration with the Regional Director, the role will include developing and overseeing NDI programs in the region and day-to-day management of DC-based team, as well as engagement with the donor and policy community. This person should be well organized, imaginative and highly motivated, and should possess excellent written and oral communication, supervisory and financial management skills. The ideal candidate will have knowledge of the SEA region’s politics and cultures ideally from prior experience working on the region.
Responsibilities:
- Provide strategic vision and leadership for the design, management and evaluation of NDI’s democratic development projects in collaboration with the Regional Director and senior program staff
- Oversee the work of regional staff in consultation with the Regional Director
- Recruit, manage, evaluate and contribute to the professional development of staff on the regional team, both in Washington, DC, and in the field offices, in consultation with the Regional Director
- Oversee the regional annual budget and negotiate grant agreements with NDI funders and partners
- Serve as the team point of contact for functional and administrative staff to ensure institutional integrity of programming and compliance with grant regulations
- Oversee the production of proposals, reports, memoranda and other publications
- Represent NDI in an informed and persuasive manner at professional meetings with partners, political and civic leaders, donors, supporters and the foreign policy community, and assist in expanding NDI’s public outreach
- Serve as the point of contact for senior NDI staff, funders and others in the absence of the Regional Director
- Keep abreast of political events in the region and provide analysis of their relevancy to current and future programming
- Travel to the region on a regular basis to assess new program opportunities, participate in and evaluate current projects, and meet with key program partners, and donors
Qualifications:
- Undergraduate degree in political science, public policy, international development, or other relevant field; Additional years of relevant work experience may be substituted for educational requirement
- Minimum of (14) fourteen years directly-relevant experience working in international political development, supplemented by significant practical experience working in at least one of NDI’s core functional areas –civic organizing, governance, political parties and elections processes
- Proficiency in oral and written English required, familiarity with French and Portuguese helpful
- Strong analytical and multi-tasking skills to tackle multiple issues and develop viable recommendations for the team
- Proven ability to effectively manage, mentor and motivate staff
- Demonstrated financial management skills and familiarity with grant funding, budget and accounting procedures
- Prior work experience in the SEA region preferrable
- Willingness to travel to countries in SEA, often at short notice, and sometimes to locations that may be difficult to reach
- Proven program development and management experience
- Familiarity with compliance requirements for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the United Kingdom Department for International Development (DFID) the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) and other donors
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Working knowledge of PC-based word processing and spreadsheet applications
- Experience with Google Apps (Gmail, Calendar, Google Drive, G+, etc.) strongly desired
