HM Revenue & Customs – Posted by HMRC London, England, United Kingdom

Job Description

Ideally the postholder will be based in London, Leeds or Manchester. But it may be possible for the post to be based in Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Newcastle or Nottingham.

Summary

HM Revenue & Customs is one of the largest Government Departments and one of the UK’s biggest organisations. Almost every individual and business in the UK is a direct customer of HMRC. We collect in excess of £500 billion a year in revenue from over 50 million customers across the UK.

We are an effective, efficient and impartial tax and payments authority with a vital purpose: to collect the money that pays for the UK’s public services and help families and individuals with targeted financial support.

We have embarked on a major transformational Programme to redirect more of our people and resources to compliance activities, modernising systems and re-engineering processes to become more customer-oriented. We also aim to bring our 65,000 staff together from 170 to 13 modern offices across the country, alongside a small number of specialist sites and an HQ.

Job description

The Solicitor’s Office and Legal Services (SOLS) is HMRC’s Legal Group. SOLS has about 1,450 staff who conduct legal and accountancy work for every part of HMRC. SOLS has four directorates.

This role is in our Legal Operations and Business Transformation Directorate. This Directorate conducts litigation in the tax and social entitlement tribunals and in various courts (other than those cases which are conducted by practising lawyers in SOLS) (this role). There is also a DD led team conducting statutory reviews of HMRC decisions and co-ordinating ministerial correspondence and a DD led team providing corporate services for SOLS (finance, people functions, strategy and planning).

SOLS primary business location is London (Bush House and in time Stratford after the move to the Regional Centre) and the post holder will need to attend there from time-to-time. But the role can be performed from anywhere where SOLS has a significant presence.

Responsibilities

This role is to lead the litigation function to ensure that it is high quality and trusted. The postholder will need to lead the operational delivery of this work whilst implementing SOLS’ strategy to ensure we are a professional, modern, influential and trusted partner which is key to delivering HMRC’s objectives. The postholder will work with SOLS senior leadership teams to ensure we are fully delivering HMRC’s strategic ambitions.

All of this is needed at a time of ambiguity and change. The UK leaving the EU continues to raise novel and difficult issues which SOLS need to advise on. And the impact of COVID-19 means SOLS needs to react quickly to HMT’s policy developments as well as dealing with the impact on our staff and business delivery. We have seen a rapid increase in more people working more regularly from home and we need to consider what that means for the future. We also want to reconsider our operating model in light of our strategy and recent developments.

The post holder will be a key member of the Legal Operations and Business Transformation Senior Leadership Team as well as HMRC’s Senior Leaders Group and will be expected to make a corporate leadership contribution.
