Measures for Justice is a nonpartisan nonprofit organization dedicated to developing tools and services that help communities, including the institutions that serve them, reshape how the criminal justice system works. Since 2011, we have been collecting, standardizing, and publishing criminal justice data to increase transparency, accessibility, and accountability. We’re leading a movement to change the future of criminal justice.
Role Overview
As a Data Scientist at Measures for Justice, you will use quantitative research methods to process and interpret criminal justice data. Your analysis will help to uncover impactful insights to support our internal research and engineering projects. Additionally, you will closely partner with our Data Science Manager to assess data readiness and improve data literacy for our external partners. Through your expertise, you will play an integral role in shaping the way criminal justice data transparency can impact local communities and institutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Use quantitative research methods to contribute to our data processing requirements
- Support data collection, cleaning, processing, and measure construction for research and engineering projects
- Collaborate with internal and external partners to support research initiatives
- Assist in designing data visualizations that inform research initiatives and partnerships
- Contribute innovative ideas for data utilization and develop proof-of-concepts to illustrate feasibility
- Demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging by modeling inclusive behaviors and proactively managing bias
Your Experience
- Skilled in quantitative research methods (e.g., applied statistics and probability, regression analysis, etc.)
- Fluency in R, Python, or other comparable programming language
- Proven experience extracting insights from large datasets
- Familiar with communicating technical concepts to non-technical audiences
- Comfortable collaborating with numerous stakeholders from various levels of seniority
- Proven experience with independent work, self-direction, and prioritization
Bonus Points
- Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in data science or other related quantitative discipline
- Experience with machine learning techniques
- Background in social sciences, criminology, or other related fields
