Job Description

The Division of Educational Ventures at Oregon State University (OSU) is a growing, innovative, and collaborative organization with a commitment to providing high-quality online education. The division extends OSU’s exceptional learning experiences including microcredentials, certificates, and degrees available to students throughout Oregon and around the world.

The division includes Ecampus, offering over 100 online and hybrid degree programs; the Ecampus Research Unit (ECRU), conducting and supporting original research in online teaching and learning; the Corporate and Workforce Education Unit (CWE), creating pathways for learners employed by partners in business and government; the Center for the Outdoor Recreation Economy (CORE), providing workforce development for the outdoor recreation industry; the Open Educational Resources Unit (OER), aiding faculty in adopting open course materials; and the Alternative Credential Unit (ACU), developing short-form educational opportunities

The Division of Educational Ventures (DEV) is a leader in national online education, our online bachelor’s program is currently ranked in the top 10 in the nation by U.S. News & World Report and has ranked in the top 10 for nine consecutive years.

The Course Development Specialist is a full-time (1.0 FTE), professional faculty position for the Division of Educational Ventures at OSU. DEV currently operates on a hybrid schedule. Tuesdays and Thursdays are designated in-office days, as well as additional days as needed.

Position Summary:

The Course Development Specialist supports ongoing continuous improvement of online and hybrid courses and learning materials by extending course development support to short-term, small-scale redevelopments. The person in this position provides tailored pedagogical, instructional design, and multimedia support for faculty engaging in course redevelopment projects from project intake through course relaunch and contributes to course quality by building the course in a manner that ensures accessible and copyright-compliant materials. The person in this position also supports other scoped projects in the division, such as builds or course maintenance related to non-credit initiatives, as well as contributes to general online faculty support during peak request periods. Course Development Specialists are supported in their work by a collaborative team of colleagues, shared resources and templates, and training and professional development opportunities both formal and informal.

Key Responsibilities Include:

Course Redevelopment Support

  • Provide instructional design and project management support on multiple short-term redevelopments of online and hybrid courses per development cycle.
  • Advise on key strategies and priorities for online and hybrid course redesign; provide guidance on the effective use of technology to support teaching, learning, and assessment.
  • Review faculty-provided content to ensure copyright and accessibility standards are met and to provide feedback that is aligned with Ecampus standards and University and federal policies.
  • Evaluate and ensure that redeveloped courses meet Ecampus standards and university and federal policies.
  • Build updated course content and media into the online platform (Canvas), including page design and formatting, embedding media and any tools being used, creating exams, and structuring rubrics.
  • Accurately interpret information received and respond appropriately in a professional manner, that is timely, clear, and concise.
  • Provide basic lecture development training to faculty and provide feedback on sample media.
  • Provide light media editing support on assigned projects; coordinate with Ecampus multimedia developers on more complex media asset developments or revisions.
  • Guide faculty developers through the expedited redevelopment process, including but not limited to setting and maintaining schedules, supporting any necessary faculty training, providing timely and appropriate support and feedback to faculty developers, and tracking completion of tasks.
  • Perform quality assurance checks on content and the learning environment to ensure that redevelopment goals are met, and that courses published are error-free and accessible for students.
  • Maintain and archive project records including meeting notes, status updates, project tracking data, and final project reviews, following established practices in the unit.

Special Projects

  • Collaborate on short-term, time-sensitive content development or revision projects related to non-credit offerings or other special projects.
  • Coordinate communication between SMEs and team contributors.
  • Contribute to the facilitation of faculty trainings and professional development events.

Faculty Support

  • During peak course preparation and launch periods, provide course maintenance support to faculty teaching existing online courses.
  • Self-assign and manage support requests, providing timely, accurate, and professional support to faculty.

Professional Development and Service

  • Attend professional workshops and meetings, sharing knowledge and networking with other hybrid and online instructional design professionals.
  • Enhance expertise by establishing professional development goals to be pursued through training, classes, professional development, conference attendance, etc.
  • Provide service to OSU and the land grant system by working on departmental, division, university, regional, and national committees, and projects.

What You Will Need:

  • Bachelor’s degree in adult education, instructional technology, curriculum design, or related field; OR a bachelor’s degree in another field with one year of experience in a teaching, curriculum or course development, or faculty support role in higher education (community college, college, or university).
  • General understanding of pedagogy and learning theories.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead multiple, time-limited projects to successful completion.
  • Experience authoring in a learning management system such as Canvas, Blackboard, or Moodle.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative, fast-paced environment.
  • Experience interacting with diverse groups of people, especially in a professional context.
  • Awareness of Universal Design for Learning principles and accessibility requirements for online content.
  • Demonstrated aptitude to solve problems with flexibility and creativity.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a customer-service oriented position.
  • Outstanding interpersonal, oral, digital, and written presentation skills.
  • A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.

What We Would Like You to Have:

  • Postgraduate certificate or degree from an accredited institution in adult education, instructional technology, curriculum design, or related field.
  • Strong understanding of pedagogy and learning theories, specifically as applied to hybrid and online courses in higher education.
  • Three years of experience in a teaching, curriculum or course development, or faculty support role in higher education (community college, college, or university).
  • Familiarity with a quality framework such as Quality Matters, OSCQR, etc.
  • Familiarity with multimedia best practices, video recording and editing, and social learning tools.

Pay range: The anticipated starting salary is $60,000 – $68,000. The starting salary will be commensurate with education, skills, experience and internal equity.

Work environment:

  • Ecampus currently operates on a hybrid schedule, Tuesdays and Thursdays are designated in-office days as well as additional days as needed.
