About Camp Huronda
Owned and operated by Diabetes Canada, Camp Huronda lies on a beautifully wooded peninsula on Lake Waseosa near Huntsville. This superb 110-acre setting offers permanent camp facilities for children living with type 1 diabetes through carefully planned programs that provide children with a summer of adventure, fun, learning and health care support. Camp Huronda operates four 12-day camp sessions throughout the summer for campers ages 7-15.
About the Role
The primary focus of the Counsellor is to work directly with campers ages 7-15. Counsellors will work in pairs to provide support, supervision and ensure that campers receive a high-quality camp experience. Counsellors will support Skills Counsellors in the facilitation of all program areas, and actively participate in all activities along with their campers. Counsellors will work closely with Skills Counsellors to contribute to the facilitation and leadership within specific program areas throughout camp.

ResponsibIlities
CAMPERS:
- Maintain 24-hour supervision of your assigned cabin group.
- Ensure physical, mental, and emotional safety of campers.
- Assisting campers in learning and adjusting to the daily routine.
- Supporting participants with feelings of missing home.
- Ensuring participants have all the required supplies and acquiring support if necessary.
- Changing and handling soiled laundry/linens and ensuring the proper cleaning of them when required.
- Work with campers and the medical team to support and foster positive diabetes management.
- Inform the Head Counsellors of any camper issues that arise in a timely manner.
- Taking responsibility for all campers, whether assigned to your cabin or not.
PROGRAMMING:
- Attend and complete all staff training.
- Maintain a camper-focus with an emphasis on intentional programming.
- Ensuring that all documentation is accurately completed and submitted in a timely manner.
- Attend all camp sessions on time and actively participate in daily camp life.
- Encouraging and motivating campers and staff to participate in activities.
- Participating with campers in programs and activities.
- Supporting in the facilitation of overnight trips.
- Supporting in the delivery of camp-wide programming.
- Providing extra supervision at mealtimes, bedtimes, and any unstructured or “choice” times.
TEAMWORK:
- Working co-operatively with all other staff.
- Upholding D-Camps Policies with both campers and staff.
- Acting as a positive role model at all times.
- Contributing to a positive camp culture.
- Assisting in the overall camp program by suggesting ideas, giving leadership when required, and completing all duties as assigned.
