Job Description
Position Overview
The Controller will lead all accounting and transactional financial functions of the organization and its affiliates including functional responsibility over general accounting and reporting, program accounting and reporting, accounts payable, program payments, accounts receivable, payroll, grants administration, and tax compliance. The Controller will ensure that that the organization has the systems, procedures and internal controls in place to protect the assets of the programs and the organization and produce highly accurate, reliable and timely financial statements in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Procedures. The Controller will work closely with program leaders and their staffs to educate them regarding financial and accounting procedures and to explore how the department can support program operations.
Essential Functions
- Establishing and maintaining effective internal controls and safeguards for the organization’s and programs’ assets, receipt of revenue and program funds, administrative costs and program expenditures;
- Oversee all accounts, ledgers and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements;
- Development, analysis, and interpretation of statistical and accounting information in order to appraise operating results in terms of profitability, performance against budget, and other matters bearing on the fiscal soundness and operating effectiveness of the organization.
- Establishes major economic objectives and policies for the organization and prepares reports that outline the organization’s financial position in the areas of assets, income and expense based on past, present and future operations; revises and updates reports to be more useful and efficient, and furnishes external reports as necessary; prepares special reports by collecting, analyzing and summarizing information.
- Oversee all financial, project/program and grants accounting; ensure that expenditures are consistently aligned with grant and program budgets throughout the grant/fund period; collate financial reporting materials for government, corporate and foundation grants.
- Complies with federal, state, and local legal requirements by studying existing and new legislation; anticipating future legislation; enforcing adherence to requirements; filing financial reports; advising management on needed actions.
- Coordinates and manages all audit activity by providing information to external auditors.
- Responsible for tax planning and compliance with all federal, state, and local corporate, payroll and other applicable taxes.
- Support the CFO in engaging the board’s audit and finance committees around issues and trends in financial operating models and delivery.
- Provide leadership in strengthening internal communications with staff at all levels throughout the organization; create and promote positive and supportive work environment.
- Maintains financial staff by recruiting, selecting and orienting employees; leverage strengths of current finance team members; help to clarify roles and responsibilities and develop and implement training programs in order to maximize and reach optimal individual and organizational goals; maintain finance staff job results by coaching, counseling and disciplining employees; planning, monitoring and appraising job results.
- Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, financial statement preparation, month-end closing, reconciliations, cash flow projections, external audit activities, maintaining internal controls and process improvements, supervising the accounting staff, ad hoc reports and analysis, and regulatory compliance.
- Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.

Minimum Qualifications
A Bachelor’s degree in finance or business is required as well as at least 10 years of finance/accounting experience with significant exposure at the management level. A Master’s degree in related field and additional professional certifications is preferred.
