Job Description
The Jewish Museum:
Founded in 1904 and located on New York City’s Museum Mile, the Jewish Museum is dedicated to the enjoyment, understanding, and preservation of the artistic and cultural heritage of the Jewish people. The Museum maintains a unique collection of nearly 30,000 works of art, ceremonial objects, and media reflecting the global Jewish experience over more than 4,000 years. The Museum applies a contemporary lens to its exhibitions, which range from ancient to contemporary art.
The Position:
The Museum has a $20 million operating budget supported by admissions, memberships, retail, philanthropy and earnings from endowment investments. The Controller is responsible for organizing and directing the Finance Department, regarding both day-to-day activities and long-term planning. The candidate must a have proven track record working with Windows-based GL system (preferably Great Plains) and related budget modules in a not-for-profit organization and is responsible for the overall accounting, budgeting, reporting, treasury and investment functions of the Museum. The candidate should have experience with gift accounting, management of endowments, spending policies and payouts from endowments.
Responsibilities Include:
- Supervising a staff of four in the accounting of all cash and non-cash transactions
- Overseeing the annual budget process under the Direction of the Deputy Director for Finance and Administration.
- Developing monthly financial reports for department heads for purposes of variance analysis and periodic reprojections
- Preparing financial materials for trustees
- Overseeing the maintenance of and staff training for general ledger/ accounts payable /payroll and reporting software
- Overseeing the accounts payable process
- Together with HR overseeing payroll and payments of associated taxes and fringe benefits
- Overseeing the annual financial audit and preparing related statements and supporting schedules
- Overseeing the annual 403b plan audit
- Overseeing the preparation of Forms 990, 990T, CHAR500, 5500 and other filings as required
- Maintaining financial policies manual detailing policies and procedures
- Managing the accounting for investments and preparation of monthly investments report
- Participating as staff member to the Finance, Audit and Investment Committees of the Board
- Managing the reconciliation of investments, endowments, spending policy and drawdowns
- Producing monthly, annual and multi-year cashflow forecasts.
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
- Responsible for banking relationships
- Provide financial information for various grants as requested
Requirements:
- Minimum five years not-for-profit financial management experience
- Significant supervisory experience in a financial management environment
- CPA required and an MBA or equivalent preferred
- Strong computer skills in Microsoft office environment
- Great Plains/Dynamics & Management Reporter experience, or experience with similar accounting software
- Strong organizational ability
- Superior communication skills, both verbal and written
- Ability to interact with senior management and Board members
