About the Project
The contractor will design and execute a research project that i) outlines the current barriers to deploying philanthropic, catalytic, and investment capital into India-based for-profit companies, projects, and funds and ii) provides a comprehensive set of corporate form options for said deployment. The final deliverables will describe the current regulatory contexts for each option and suggest creative ideas for how to advance catalytic capital in India, despite rigid regulations that may have been built to prevent harm unrelated to the deployment of catalytic capital. Research methods will include interviews with legal experts in the US and India, as well as catalytic capital asset owners (e.g. Lemelson Foundation), prospective intermediaries (e.g. Prime Coalition), and prospective capital recipients (e.g. Green Artha). The final deliverables could likely be used to author and publish an Op-Ed beyond the engagement period.
Scope of Work:
Legal/corporate form research – 80%
- Prepare a specific set of legal and strategy questions
- Make a work plan that targets how to address each question
- Consult with Prime’s pro bono and paid legal teams as needed
- Conduct legal literature review
- Conduct primary and secondary research about the regulatory and interpersonal barriers to deployment of catalytic capital in India
- Explore the full range of possible corporate form intermediation options and associated mechanisms Deliver final narrative memo
- Deliver final presentation with standalone sense
Convene interested stakeholders – 20%
- Assemble and lead a focus group of interested stakeholders, including but not limited to asset owners, intermediaries, lawyers, and India-based investees to stress test findings in real time
- Integrate research findings into Prime’s “7 phases of launching a catalytic capital program” framework as part of final deliverables
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Previous experience in catalytic capital or blended finance required
- Previous experience in fund formation preferred
- Previous experience in an Indian context preferred
- Previous experience in financial sector in EU, UK, and/or US preferred
- Current or former MBA, Law or relevant graduate experience preferred
