Full-Time Content Strategist
Job Description
We’re on the lookout for a client-focused, strategic-minded experienced content strategist to join an existing account team to lead the strategy behind our client’s content marketing campaigns. As a content strategist, you’ll ensure every piece of content created – from ideation to distribution – is purposeful and designed to drive business results.
About You
- You know what it takes to make great content. You are a storyteller. You understand that telling great stories is more than putting words down on paper. It involves a well-thought-out strategy, research, and a strong understanding of the subject. You are creative and can brainstorm topic ideas for engaging content, but you don’t need to be the person with the byline on the article.
- You see the big picture. You’re highly skilled at strategy. You can take information from clients and translate it into a road map that will guide content creation. You are an experienced, data-driven strategy creator who can pull interesting stories out of clients and create the framework for a piece of content that aligns with their overall strategy and engages their audience. You stay up-to-date with what’s going on in your clients’ industries and know how to utilize keywords, SEO best practices, and data to enrich content. You are comfortable suggesting article topics and publications based on research and each client’s success markers.
- You are a strong communicator. You can translate your ideas to your team and clients in a clear, concise manner. You are skilled in your communication, which allows you to set clear expectations with clients. There may be times when you have to push back on clients and serve in a consulting capacity. Your self-assurance and communication style allow you to do this in a way that educates and builds trust.
- You manage projects effectively. In addition to being creative, you are organized, detail-oriented, and deadline-focused. You can see the big picture of a project, but you also have a strong understanding of the smaller building blocks and time requirements that contribute to providing high-quality products and services in a timely manner. You work closely with your team to keep projects moving forward. You can switch between the big picture and more micro-level tasks when needed.
- You can handle feedback. Clients are not always going to like every idea that comes to them. You are able to handle feedback in a variety of forms. You practice self-care if feedback brings up discomfort. You invest your time and energy into finding solutions. Perhaps that means you go back to the drawing board, or maybe you hop on the phone to consult with and educate a client. You move forward and you don’t internalize a client’s disapproval.
- You love researching new subjects. You are a lifelong learner. You will be working with a variety of clients and industries, some of which might not be familiar to you. You are not expected to know everything about what our clients do — they are the experts in that department. However, you are willing and able to dive into new topics and strengthen clients’ content with supplemental research. You know that the time spent researching will allow you to develop better topic ideas and create in-depth questions that give your clients the opportunity to share their unique expertise.
- You collaborate well with others. You’re great at working on a team and with other departments. You actively listen to clients and team members and are able to receive and implement feedback in your day-to-day work. You understand that your work is important to other members of the team and that missing deadlines can impede their ability to do their jobs. You contribute to brainstorming sessions with your team and receive input that will assist you with putting together a comprehensive strategy for each client.
So what does the content strategist role look like in real time?
Let’s break down the first year. Please note, below is a rough timeline because everyone operates at their own pace. As long as we’re in communication, we will do our best to support your unique pace.
- At the 30-day mark, we expect content strategists to have an understanding of Influence & Co.’s content creation process and service lines, as well as content marketing as an industry. Don’t worry — you will receive plenty of training on all of these! You will also start being introduced to your clients during this time. You’ll work closely with your team’s account strategist and editor to learn about each client’s company, goals, communication styles, success metrics, etc.
- At the 60-day mark, you will feel comfortable using our content creation platform, ICo. Core, as well as other tech solutions involved in your job (Monday.com, Slack, and Google Drive, to name a few). By this time, you’ll be getting more comfortable with brainstorming and presenting topics to clients, as well as starting to create question sets for client interviews. Of course, you will still be supported at this stage, but you will be experiencing more autonomy. During the first 60 days, you will also be introduced to the content strategy document, which will be your blueprint for building client strategies.
- Once you’ve reached 90 days, we expect content strategists to function in their roles with support. We never expect questions to stop, especially right after your initial new hire training concludes! We try to prepare you to tackle things on your own and as a team, but we don’t expect you to know everything in 90 days. We want you to be proficient on the tech side of things and feel confident in your ability to pitch content ideas, create interview question sets, and communicate with clients. You’ll be showing more autonomy and becoming more equipped to process feedback. You’ll have a strong understanding of publication guidelines, including where to find them and how to implement them into your process of crafting content pitches.
- At six months, you are cruising right along! You know your clients well and are capable of providing feedback to them and receiving it. You have developed strategies to manage content projects well. You can prioritize and determine what moving parts go into a larger project. You’re still pulling in support on those new-to-you situations, but you’re looking to the future and setting goals for what’s to come.
- It’s now been one year. You’re getting a “Happy Workiversary!” shout-out and maybe a little gift to mark this milestone. At this time, you are truly comfortable creating client strategies and explaining your rationale. Your communication with clients is on point. You might even be in a position to push back on clients and stick up for your ideas because they’re backed by experience and research. Your ability to problem-solve and create new solutions for clients is growing each week.

- Experience working with keyword research, SEMRush or similar tools, and/or informing content ideation and creation

- Comfortable working in Google Slides to create presentations to communicate with clients and convey content strategy.
- Comfortable working with the full Google suite of products, such as Gmail and Google Documents.
- Comfortable with the idea of training someone or managing another team member
