Full-Time Construction Technician – Entry Level!
Job Description
- Support senior Technicians and Engineers performing technical duties in areas such as construction, materials testing, design, survey, and/or program/regulatory compliance.
- Perform standardized material tests, accurate record keeping, and make measurements and calculations of pay quantities to ensure contractor compliance with contract, plans, and specifications and adequate project documentation.
- Assist in project-related survey work using surveying equipment including GPS to provide proper line and grade for the construction of various roadways, structures, and construction operations.
- Independently perform calculations to determine contract pay quantities.
- Inspect work for compliance and/or code.
- Collect, organize, and analyze field and engineering-related data, products, and/or functions.
- Place survey stakes, operate surveying instruments, cut brush, and run test on materials – all in accordance with established policy and procedures.
- Inspect roadway and bridge projects.
- Experience planning, developing, scheduling, tracking, and completing projects independently/with limited supervision.
- Experience maintaining standard daily records and reports.
- Knowledge of standards and specifications and plan reading experience.
- Knowledge and understanding of general concepts, practices, and theories used in construction, construction inspection, and/or construction surveying.
- Ability to obtain and maintain certifications required to perform material sampling and testing.
- Ability to perform duties without constant supervision.
- Ability to read resource materials to determine answers to simple surveying requirements and inspections.
- Good verbal and written communication skills to communicate in a clear, concise, organized, and persuasive manner.
- Computer experience using a laptop/iPad, and software.
- Capable of maintaining positive working relationships.
- Good eyesight (glasses are ok!) to use testing instruments and equipment, read plan details, make accurate field measurements, and inspect roadway and structure components.
- Agility to climb on bridge substructures and superstructures.
- Capable of exercising limited decision making and judgement.
- Able to safely perform manual tasks involving the use of bush axes, sledge hammers, and other tools on steep and rough terrain.
- Ability to apply NCDOT’s safety program to operations, and you can work safely in an outside environment with exposure to hazards present on construction sites including traffic, heights, and traversing rough, steep, and uneven terrain.
- Agility to perform moderate physical activity such as walking, climbing, kneeling, and standing.
- Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology, or a related field; or
- An equivalent combination of training and experience.
- You will be subject to high traffic volumes and extreme temperatures/weather conditions.
- Your work will include emergency situations, nights, and weekends.
- Management prefers candidates with a Driver’s license.
- Safety toe shoes are required.
