Job Description
- Serve as the lead project inspector and support senior engineers in the administration of medium to large highway construction projects.
- Monitor projects and materials to ensure conformance to specifications and contractual provisions.
- Supervise and train junior technician including NCDOT staff and contractors to ensure adequate inspection staff are assigned to active projects.
- Perform/review project documentation, including work performed by other technicians, to ensure that all material sampling and testing, project documentation, and project estimates are done correctly.
- Resolve daily constructability issues and ensure that traffic control and contractor’s operations are performed in accordance with plans and standard drawings.
- Monitor contractor progress to ensure timely completion of projects.
- Monitors contractor compliance with subcontractors, Disadvantaged Business Enterprise, and Title VI compliance.
- Communicate and coordinate work with contractors, subcontractors, utility owners, and property owners.
- Apply a wide range of decision making and use of good judgment.
- Experience planning, developing, scheduling, tracking, and completing projects independently or with limited supervision.
- Customer service experience solving problems involving explaining complicated engineering concepts to various customer groups.
- Experience applying engineering concepts to solve complex problems.
- You work best in a team environment to complete assignments.
- Computer skills using Microsoft Office and drafting software.
- Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.
- Ability to plan and coordinate work of others.
- Ability to resolve routine problems and effectively communicate more complex problems to supervisors to assist in resolution.
- Strong communication skills to effectively communicate, establish, and maintain working relationships with contractors, NCDOT, local government, other non-DOT staff, and the public.
- Ability to complete project documentation electronically using a computer or iPad and using SharePoint and HiCams programs.
- You may be required to work nights and weekends as needed.
- Safety toe shoes are required.
- Management prefers candidates with a driver’s license.
- Associate’s degree in Engineering Technology, and
- 6+ years of relevant technician experience; or
- High School/GED diploma, and
- 8+ years of relevant technician experience; or
- An equivalent combination of education and experience.
