Full-Time Construction Engineering Specialist I
Job Description
- Serve as a lead project inspector in our Salisbury Resident Engineer’s office.
- Support senior engineers in the administration of large complex highway construction projects.
- Conduct independent inspections.
- Read and interpret highway construction plans, sampling and materials testing, analysis of engineering data to ensure conformance to specifications and contractual provisions.
- Supervise and assist in training junior technicians (NCDOT or Contractor’s staff).
- Assign daily project inspection duties to junior technicians.
- Monitor contractor progress to ensure timely completion of projects and contractor compliance with subcontractors and Disadvantaged Business Enterprises (DBE) and Title VI compliance.
- Resolve daily constructability issues on projects, highway construction surveying, and layouts.
- Experience planning, developing, scheduling, tracking, and completing projects independently or with limited supervision.
- Experience applying engineering concepts to solve complex problems.
- Experience conducting independent, moderately complex surveying.
- Experience working in a team environment to complete assignments.
- Experience reading and interpreting construction plans, contract provisions, specifications, and procedures.
- Communications skills to establish and maintain positive communication between technicians, engineers, contractors, and the public, plus the ability to effectively communicate in a clear, concise, organized, and persuasive manner, verbally and in writing.
- Ability to make independent decisions using sound engineering judgement.
- You can work safely in an outside environment with exposure to hazards on construction sites including heights, highway traffic, weather extremes, and traversing rough terrain in evaluating highway construction.
- Fitness to perform work duties involving walking, climbing, balancing, kneeling, and standing.
- Strength to lift 50 pounds.
- Computer skills in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook).
- Experience with iPads/tablets, HiCAMS, and SharePlus/SharePoint is highly preferred.
- Advanced working knowledge of math functions.
- Ability to work nights and/or weekends as required by project workload/staffing with fluctuating hours, if needed.
- You apply a strong safety philosophy and program to all operations.
- Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.
- Safety toe shoes.
- Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology, or related discipline, and
- 6+ years progressive technician experience; or
- High School/GED Diploma, and
- 8+ years progressive technician experience; or
- An equivalent combination of education and experience.
