Part-Time Community Outreach Ranger
Job Description
This is a part time role, 22.2 hours per week on a fixed term contract for 4 years.
Location
Reporting point will be Sherwood Pines (Cannock Chase Forest will also be considered) covering East Midlands with a focus on communities in the National Forest, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Derbyshire/S Yorkshire.

We are looking for an organised, self-motivated and good communicator who is passionate about helping people access their local woodlands. The role aims to encourage involvement and engagement with minority ethnic communities in Forestry England’s woodlands, focusing on the East Midlands area.
The role involves delivering community engagement activities: understanding the needs of communities: supporting and facilitating 3rd party volunteering on Forestry England land; linking communities with Forestry England led volunteering activity and our recreation offer. Reaching out to groups that are unaware or have not visited a Forestry England woodland before will be a priority alongside building on existing relationships with local community groups, schools, and corporate volunteer groups.
The post holder will also deliver the ‘One-ness grove’ project for the East Midlands, working in partnership with Eco-Sikh UK. The project aims to create woodland spaces with the purpose of being beautiful, natural and mindful places for multi-faith or no faith visitors to offer inspiration for people to visit and restore or improve their wellbeing.
The Central Forest District has responsibility for the management of some 30,000ha of the Nation’s Forests within a triangle formed by Liverpool, Hull and Milton Keynes. This gives rise to a large diversity of users, customers, neighbours and pressures, all of which are interacting on a varied backdrop of land uses.
The District has three Community Woodland areas, in Nottinghamshire, The National Forest and the North West covering Greater Manchester, Merseyside and Lancashire. As well as 7 forest centres in Cheshire, Staffordshire, Nottinghamshire, Northamptonshire and the National Forest. Forest Centres attract most of our visitors and have a host of facilities to provide safe, welcoming areas for people to enjoy and support our commercial aims to help nature to thrive. timber to grow.
Community Woodlands are a key element of the land holding Forestry England manages, providing woodland sites for local communities to enjoy, for nature to thrive and timber to grow. The Community Woodlands vary in size and facilities and are managed by small, dedicated and motivated teams.
Key Work Areas
Community Engagement
- Help to design and implement a programme of outreach activities for under-represented groups, working with the District Volunteer Coordinator and National Forestry England team where appropriate.
- Work with community groups, particularly from minority ethnic, religious communities and refugees, to understand what the barriers are for them to access Forestry England Woodlands.
- Support team to create and maintain good working relations with partner organisations and other interested parties within East Midlands promoting Forestry England aims and objectives.
- Work with Eco-Sikh UK and RPA Manager (Communities) to identify a suitable location for the One-ness Grove and community groups to engage in the project to help design and create the Grove.
Team Working/ Managing People
- Establish good communication and working relationships with other forest district and local staff.
- Actively participate in discussions, providing rec and community information to other members of the team to assist with the efficient working and communication
- Manage and supervise volunteer work parties/events as part of the One-ness Grove project
- Work with other colleagues including Project team, Civils, Sustainable Land Management, Ecology and Heritage, Marketing and Communications and Estates
Health and Safety
- Prepare and use risk assessments for sites, facilities, and activities.
- Manage the careful collection of data and event feedback, uploading to National Volunteer database ensuring information is current and stored correctly.
Monitoring and evaluation
- Collect data and feedback throughout the programme feeding into district and national monitoring of outreach programme.
- Provide project updates and reports to Community team.
Person Specification
Professional and Technical Expertise
- A Higher National Diploma or equivalent level in community development, community engagement or countryside management or work experience in these areas built up over several years
- Experience of working with Minority Ethnic communities
- Competent user of IT, in particular social media, and Microsoft packages such as Word, Excel, and Forester Web (GIS).
- Experience in communicating clearly and concisely in writing, using different media forms to communicate effectively with a diverse range of people
- Experience in handling confidential information sensitively and ensuring the right people are informed.

- Practical experience of working with different groups from different backgrounds on community engagement projects including the planning & leading of such work in the community.
- Proven and demonstrable commitment to the principles and practice of equal opportunities
- Experience of dealing with conflict and challenging situations.
- Self-motivated and able to meet agreed objectives on own initiative or within the team and meet deadlines
- Excellent communication and organisational skills
Desirable
- Strong community links and contacts in the East Midlands area
- Experience of working with groups outdoors
- Experience of working with contractors in an outdoor setting.
- Experience of database entry or Customer Relationship Management
- Experience of working with hand tools and carrying out maintenance tasks.
- A proven track record in inspecting and maintaining safe conditions for visitors, and safe working conditions for colleagues including volunteers, and proven awareness of requirements for Health and Safety.
